Default Dont always follow advice posted on the internet!

Just been trying to figure out why my fuel pump on the RST wasn't priming so first thought was to check fuel pump relay, did a quick search on here to see how to check the relay.

Found a thread saying that all you need to do is bridge connection 31 to 54-15 on the relay, brilliant.

Happily popped off outside wire in hand, bridged said pins and flicked the ignition expecting pump to prime.

Nope instead I felt a burning sensation in my right hand followed by the smell of burning flesh..hmm something isn't quite right here, look down to see the wire cherry red cauterising my finger tips. Awesome.

After throwing the wire out the car and cooling my fingers off, been to check the pins I bridged, wires on the back, brown and black with red stripe, so that's earth and live then excellent.

Feel like such a plank for not checking before hand

Doesn't hurt yet, but I get the feeling it will do in an hour or 2.
How long does burning flesh smell hang about for too?

I feel pics are needed, I shall update later

Haha, It took me a second or 2 to realise as it was that hot I didn't really feel it if that makes sense

Didn't want to let go of the wire either just incase the car went up

More embarassed than pissed off too haha

LOL

I think the title should be changed to "dont blindly follow advice" irrelevant of if you get it from the internet or anywhere else.

Always think about not just what you are being told to do but why, and then check it makes sense, which in the case of connecting those particular pins together, it clearly didnt.

thats not a fix, its a way of diagnosing a faulty relay, by bypassing it for a minute.
