E39 m5 fuel consumptio
Know a lot of people on here have owned them, what sort of mpg did you get? Im considering one and also e46 m3's, i drove both at the weekend and found the m5 felt a monster compared to the m3 but the trip computer was reading 11mpg! I dont do many miles but dont want to get something so bad that i dont want to drive it. Cheers

They can be thirst beasts but if you plod about they can also be pretty reasonable too considering what they are. Mine used to see high 28's on a run and usually 16-17 round the doors. I bloody miss my barge

Mine is offensive. I average 11mpg on weekdays.
However... thats because my drive to work is only 1.2miles. its cold all the way there and all the way back.
At weekends when we go away, If I reset the counter, I personally get an average of about 18-20mpg but I must admit I am very heavy footed.
If Mandy drives for an hour or two, she tends to see nearer 25mpg on the usual extra urban kind of cycle.
Cruising on the Mway at 65 returns 30+, but cruising at 90 in germany returns nearer 25mpg.

Mine averages 17 MPG, I think you'd be being optimistic if you expected an average of say +22mpg, but I suppose that depends on where you drive it.
As for fuel cost, depends what you're willing to pay, the E46 will be alot better, and given the fuel prices probably a wiser choice TBH. I can afford to run mine, but I am starting to grudge £350-£400/month on fuel, I think there comes a time where you have to draw the line.

Not at all mate as they are massively over engineered in every single aspect of their build.
Engine wise its well worth remembering that 12K on a V8 is quite similar to 60K or less on any other engine, bearing in mind the usual gearing due to torque available etc. As an example, I very rarely exceed 2500rpm in mine during normal driving.
The oil usage issue I believe affected the early cars. my advise is always buy a facelift version, they are better in so many ways..
