Default V5 and Insurance..

Hi all

Just wanted to ask here if anyone knows much about the problem which i was made aware of today. I phoned up my insurance company to request my documentation as i have since renewed my policy and to also ask about putting Mrs slaney21 on there also as a named driver.

The problem which was pointed out to me over the phone is that the V5 has Mrs slaney21's details on it and im insured to drive it as i use it for work whereas she doesn't use it whatsoever at the moment so she has no insurance. The person on the other end of the phone said that my insurance would be deemed illegal if it is insured under my name and i am not the registered keeper of the car? I wasn't told this when i renewed last year when i mentioned that il be driving even though she is the owner of the car and they still issued me insurance?

We are changing the v5 later and popping it back to DVLA just to make sure all avenue's are covered so i will be the registered keeper which is a pain in the hoop but i just wanted to know is this information i was told correct etc??

Thanks all

How does it work with company vehicles and lease cars then as you technically never have those registered to you?

Valdermort and I used to swap the main policy holder each year as the other 2 cars were on classic policies so it meant we could keep both lots of full no claims alive

I have a car that is insured in my name.
The wife however is the main driver.
It is insured on this basis.
They wouldn't do it otherwise.
Having it registered to her and insured by me wasn't allowed.

yeah thats what she said to me. Because the (soon to be) wife isn't insured they and is the registered keeper they are saying my insurance since last year upto now is or has been in effect "illegal" or "void"

Il just cart off the V5 tomorrow with my details on it. Thank you for the replies so far gents

I bought a fiesta zs for my sister to use and she was asked 'are you the owner and registered keeper of the vehicle' and when she said no, they saod they couldn't insure her.

I had to put it in her name for her to get cover.

I had this last year when I was repairing a mate's car with a view to selling it.

I cannot get my head around why an insurance company CANNOT insure you on a car for which you are not the REGISTERED KEEPER - bearing in mind that being the registered keeper does NOT automatically mean you are the LEGAL OWNER of the car - the bloody V5 goes to great lengths to state this as well!

Fucking ridiculous - would absolutely love someone in the insurance game to explain why this is the case as it's a spectacular pain in the arse and, in my case of tasting the car up to sell, sticking another owner on the V5 for a short period of time didn't do my sale any favours!!!

mate insurance companys just make shit up when they want to, i bought a car to run about it and give my ex driving lessons,,,,, they said as she is a learner driver if she had a crash when it was in MY name they could look at is as being her car on my insurance so i had to get a policy out on her name and get the car in her name,,, when we split up i called to cancel the insurance and told i couldnt as it wasnt my fucking policy i was just a named driver,,, i explained im the main driver for the car and was told THE TOTAL OPPOSITE as im the MAIN drver of the fucking car,,,, also pointless as im insured to drive anycar too

IMO aslong as the address is the same fuck all will happen, you can tax a car on line in anyname as the system just checks if the car is actually insured and not the name

ok here is the law as i work for an insurance company

you cannot be insured on something that you have no financial interest in, ie you cant just insure yourself on someone elses car.

the only clause to this husband and wife, when you are married you become joint ownership of everything you both own, including cars....hence divorces are always a mess.

with that in mind you can insure yourself on your wifes/husbands car and be perfectly legal as technically you own it aswell.

you cannot on the otherhand insure yourself on your girlfriend/boyfriends car as you have no financial interest in it....that includes you buying it, it will go off the registered keeper, not who paid for it

simple as that

Turbotoaster - while I don't personally agree with the laws you have stated in their context - thanks for posting up and explaining things from an insurance company's point of view.

My ex was in effect my common law wife as we had a mortgage together the lot. Does this mean we were being naughty or was this ok as nothing was with held from the insurers

I mentioned this to the person on the phone and she didn't really know much about it. I was always told that as long as the details are correct on the insurance documents and consent is given to have the car insured from the registered keeper then there was no issues. I was even pulled over 2 weeks into the cover last year for potentially having no insurance but it was just their system which hadn't updated so i don't know if its something recent or something went amiss?

Thank you for the response on the matter I'm sending off the V5 tomorrow with my details on and letting my insurance company know so there's no mishaps or any hidden agenda's etc

Well I didn't know that, a few months ago my mate wanted to buy my motorbike but didn't have all the cash so I gave him the bike and let him pay monthly I kept the log book In my name until he payed the bike In full ( just In case he didn't pay) he did tell them when he insured it he was not the registered keeper but they didn't say a word, good job it didn't get nicked or him bin it In the time it was still In my name.

You learn something new everyday

I know with my traders policy I have to put the car in my name if I own it over 14days for insurance purposes so that statement by turbotoaster makes sense.
Theoretically you could insure something newish, smash into it un insured then claim off your insurance on a phantom car you never actually owned.

We gave the wife's old car to our oldest. It is still registered in her name - why add another keeper unnecessarily.

He has his own policy with Direct Line and the certificate/schedule states that he neither the owner or registered keeper of the car. She is on the policy as a named driver.

I'd expect his beneficial interest is that if he kills the car he will owe his mum the value of it?
