hi to you all im new here
just a few quiestions about the mk5 cortina
im looking for a new car and i have all ways worked on classic fords with my brothers mk1 /mk2 escorts capri,s
i like the look of mk5 cortinas
but i have kids
1.do they have rear seat belts or can they be fitted
2. are they quite a comfy ride
3. are they fumey inside (as my brothers escort is)
just dont want to buy one and cant take the kids in it

no they dont rear seatbealts,should be able to fit seatbelts
no there not fumey unless something wrong
comfy but dont expect morden car comfort

if you want comfy and rear belts, you'd be better off looking for a Granada

Cortina's are OK though, as long as the shocks aren't passed it and the void bushes have been done.

I'm sure at least on the later mk5 the anchor points were there under the seat, my dads next door neighbour has just sold one(mk5), now just has his 2l JPS mk2 capri.
Nothing like a modern car comfort, handling wise but do the job perfectly, not that noisy, a bit roly poly compared with newer stuff, but imo a better car than the capri, ghia's are especially nice.
My dads neighbour has had many of these, there is a website for the cortina as well as he is on it, so worth a look.

Austin Maestro belts fit fine as the inertia has to be fitted on the rear shelf, mk3,4 and 5 Tinas all have the anchorage threads ready to fit belts.

prooper cortina ones come up occasionly on ebay but expect to pay over Ł60 for a set of proper one, sucuron (sp) do new ones

couple of nice one's on ebay, one got silly low mileage 2.0gl red, i think 11,000+ from new, the other one has been restored at some point 2.0ghia white

how easy is it to put a pinto in ie wireing
ive already got a set of lazer rims for it

i might be wrong but you might have to change the box as well, as for the wiring, i dont think you have to change anything, no computer bits

as for the boot floor in the crusader, its a bit rusty or badly repaired, it looks a right mess

as for the box i was just going to put a type 9 in with the pinto

Unless u r thinking of going on motorways or doing a lot of touring I would stick with a 4 speed box a type9 5 speed kill the driveability of a pinto I put one in mine and after two days changed it back again unless u want to go with all the aggro of changing the input shaft on a Capri 2.8 type9 stick with 4 on the floor and if u think a 5 speed will help with economy u wont really notice any difference unless as I say u r planning on doing major touring.

i was going to use a 5 speed (sierra box type 9) as i thought it was a dirrect fit
my main issue at the moment is seat belts as it will be my every day car
so the rear bolt holes will be under the seats will the top holes be there or will i need to drill them out all so cant i use any rear seat belts out of any car with a lap belt in the middle

ALL the holes you need are there already for the belts.
My dads neighbour sold his one about 2 months ago, for either Ł1200 or Ł1000, can't remember, he had a 5 speed in his and found it much better, if I remember right(?) he said the clutch fork comes out the other side, either that or there was some other minor easy to fix difference, he used the prop off another ford that fitted directly, could well be a capri one as he has them now.

U may find when u remove the rear seat / parcel shelf the bolt holes will be plugged up with plastic bungs mine was so don't panic if ya can't c them straight away. A type 9 will fit straight on but u will need a straight gearbox cross member instead of the horseshoe one and if u match the box to the engine ie 2 litre engine / 2 litre box the prop will fit with no modification u will have to trim the rear of the gearstick hole on the transmission tunnel a Tad though. Slightly longer speedo cable again from a sierra / Granada is fine apart from that hope u find a good one cause they r awesome fun with a few pounds u can really make them go and handle lovely wish I kept all mine now!

as far as i can remember they do, it's right next to/part of the latch thing on the door

how did your search go mate did you get a tina in the end ?
as for your questions im onto my second MK5 now after swapping my first one for a 5 series bmw last year.
first one didnt have rear belts but the new one does they are fairly easy to get hold of on the right sites try looking on retrorides fordpower and as above buy sell cortina you might get lucky on manchester classic ford as a few of us have them on there as well.
gearbox wise the sierra five speed type nine does go in easy but you need either an auto x member or a modified standard one other choice is to do what im doing which is to borrow a mates auto and get it copied for about Ł40.
comfort levels wont compare to newer cars but is probably near the top of the list for the oldies im only 29 and i find them nice to drive my old one had burton -2" springs and polybushes it drove nice for what it was with a stock 2.0 pinto.
the new one is a bit more involved its getting a 2.9 V6 cosworth dropped in with a V6 type nine a mate in the club has one that sits at 80 all day and returns miles better fuel than my 2.0 pinto he managed from north wales to manchester then on to ford fair with a bit of playing along the way only used Ł30 in fuel.

If you start with a 2.0 the 5 speed goes straight in with an auto Xmember and the first 4 gear ratios are identical to the 4 speed so you wont notice a thing, they are however differant to the 1600 box which have a better spread of ratios
All 4 cylinder 5 speeds are the same box they all need the 2.0 prop and clutch, i prefer CVH boxes cos they tend to have had an easyer life granada 5 speeds use a leccy speedo drive so if you get one of those they need the rear casing swaping for a manual drive speedo version
