MSD fan uprated switches?
Finally got my car going, but i'm having a problem with the fans switching on. They work fine witht he over ride switch, but the fan switch in the rad isn't bringing them on
Has anyone else had issue with using the uprated switch in a standard rad?

Although said to be for alloy rads, it was the hysteresis(span) that was the improvement so better for std rads as well, the std rad fan switch was trying to get the temp below what the stat was trying to raise it to in some cases.
I was sent a msd one, that worked fine, purchaser just wanted to know actual span, ie on off temps of the switch, was switching fine.

That temp you mention the 90 degrees would be correct, the "Uprated" switch does not close to around that temp and has just a few degrees span and so the fans operate for a short cycle, the trouble with the standard switch is that it brings the fans on to early and for far to long due to it's huge span (This is what causes the OE fuses etc to melt) If you have an alloy rad it suffers further from a heatsink effect and then the fans don't switch off. The standard span is some 11 degrees 88 degrees close and 77 degrees open which as said causes fighting with the stat as well.

I have a Alloy rad on mine with genuine Ford fan switch and had no problems so far.
The fans are only on for around 1 minute and it stays cool unless it's standing or booted again.
I put the uprated one in mine and the fans would'nt kick in until the temp gauge was nearly touching the Red
I binned it

I'm coming to the end of my MKII Escort Cosworth build.
I've a Pro-Alloy Rad with an MSD Switch as mentioned.........guessing it's just a fingers crossed situation for me.
Just one question, is it a good idea to run a 82degree Thermostat to help matters ?
Burton do a Ford Unit (Part No. 1668305) but they're nearly Ł60
This is my first Cosworth Engine so all a little new to me.

Out of interest i'm going to test mine properly, i've a thermocouple i use for work, so i'm going to heat the fan switch up and see when it opens.
I haven't report mine to MSD as i bought it ages ago and its not super expensive. Point of my post was just to see if many others had had this problem and to find out what switch is reliable.

Can you post a pic of the switch please? I have a similar problem with my small turbo escort. I'm NOT running an MSD switch, but a new one with a green casing, when the old one was red. In both instances, the fans won't come on with just radiator heat, even though the temp guage is near the red. The fans WILL work if you bridge the switch, which proves all the relays/wiring, or if you use the aircon switch to bring them in.

However mine has a white plastic surround on it, so maybe that green one is a revision over my type?

Same fault as me, this is a link to the MSD switch

Thing is, I replaced my red switch due to the fans not coming in, so I'm wondering now if the switch I replaced it with is just no good/ wrong for the car? Are small turbo fan switches the same as the Webber managed cars?
I'm running std radiator, which is getting hot enough to burn your hand on, so should kick the fans in.
Might try another switch in the car tomorrow .. As said, I didn't get mine from MSD, but a different supplier.
Anyone know where to get a std switch from?

Small turbo switches are different as are BT escorts and late model sapphires. You have 4 contacts in your switch as the escorts had dual stage fans, one on then the second at a certain temp. The sierras just have either both on or both off fans, so only have two contacts. Both electrical connects are completely different too.
Ford still do the switches i think?

Both of mine come in and if the ignition is switched off one of the fans stops but the other continue's until cooled.

Easiest thing to do in your case as a test is to bridge the fan plug connector, this should start the fans, if it dosen't then it's NOT a switch problem, to be honest the switches rarely give trouble.
It's perfectly normal if you touch the radiator to get burnt.
To be honest I think the MSD "Uprated" switch is from another particular Ford

What temp should the fans kick in at and switch off at using the msd switch? I have one on mine and will test to see how well it performs. I just fitted mine and then forgot about it lol. As long as my fans come on before the dsh gauge gets too high and then turn off again, i'm happy
