thats cool, so say you start off witha standard version, what good upgrades will be worth doing, does milage really matter on cars like this?
do you need to have them remapped etc once you start changing bits, who can do this aswell
any forums i can go take a butchers looking at

Start with a custom remap, MRC in banbury will then tweek it for a small price unless you change the injectors. Exhaust, brakes, filter, fmic, then next stage is turbos really. That would give you about 350bhp on stock turbos.
Bahnstorm in Northampton are also experts on them, he does all my work.
Mileage isnt a problem as long as the turbos havent had to put up with boost leaks for long. Ideally you want as low as you can afford, personally I wouldnt want to go for anything over 110k, but there are plenty that are running 150k+ on factory turbos.

i know what you mean about turbos, and im confident enough to take engines out no matter what car it is, so proberbly best to try and find one thats had turbos replaced for ko4s then or a cheap one with turbos blown lol
problem is most are over 100k now by the looks of things, ill take a look on the website aswell thanks

If you are happy to do the turbos yourself then its not really an issue, as its labour that is the big sting!
There is one on pistonheads at the moment thats got new k03's and other mods for a decent price, or a one with a spec similar to mine for 8.5k.
If you are not too bothered about the turbos going you could take a gamble for a really cheap one and run it till they pop and then upgrade to k04.
My mate in Northampton wants about 3500 for his, its priced low due to having 185k on the clock, but its a very tidy Nogaro blue avant

You wont need the cossie once you get some power in it
Strong 4x4, no rust or rot, every day usable power, all the toys, leather, climate control etc etc, what more do you need?
I still love cossies, but would NEVER bother getting another now Ive got the S4

Most places quote 0-60 5.6 or 5.7 for either and both are limited ( if not delimited / remaped ) to 155, think they quote 167 unlimited.
how old or big are the kids then? as they dont have the best of rear leg room
#56
at the minuete im insuring a fully modded xr4x4 with cossie running gear in and a mondeo st24 lol
#57
dunno your age or ncb and convictions, but that does seem high ( i know insurance has gone up )
but had mine insured with www.noeldazely.co.uk and also good old adrainflux.
#58
To be honest I think its just me that is bumping up the insurance prices seeing as I live in an area of London with the 3rd highest crime rate and only have 1 years no claims
#59
Admiral are good for modded S4's, or check Sky Insurance on audisrs, you get a discount with them.
Avant performance is as good as the same as the saloon.
When remapped the 155 limiter is removed, mine is good for about 180

time to start sorting what cars to sell now and go buy one decent one
are rs4 parts esaily available, like turbos, exhaust, coolers, etc or is it just a case of waiting for them to pop up on ebay

You're better off buying new genuine k04 turbos, but NOT the cheap chinese copies, they are shit.
All other parts are easily available, there are always RS4 owners upgrading, and at worst, ebay.de has tons on there.
If you can afford it, get a facelift, there are tons of changes

It came in around half way through '99 with some cross overs that had a mix of both.
Full facelifts are from early 2000.
There are loads of changes, off the top of my head:
Door handles
Washer jets hidden on FL, on bonnet on pre
Boot lid handle
Rear number plate recess
Rear bumper
Buttons on dash
Climate control unit
Digital clock on FL, analogue on pre
Ambient down lighting on facelift on gearstick area and rear seat
Exhaust manifolds (important one, as early pre cars can break up and damage turbos)
Headlamps and indicators are one unit on FL, seperate on pre
ESP (traction control) on FL
S4 badge logo
Side repeaters
Rear lights
Vented rear discs on FL
Turbo oil feed pipes improved
Steering, suspension and other tweeks
I think thats about it!

ESP and digital clock happened early 2000, because they werent actually part of the facelift. Badge was later still, perhaps even 2001?
Everything else you mentioned will be present on all facelift cars. They started around april/may 1999.
