Pretty sure when I did this on my old mk1 I had to remove the centre console, I defo removed this and think it was for that reason, there is a clip on the rear that needs undoing before it can be swapped out.

Hi did you manage to change the cigarette lighter without taking the console off? i have the same problem, changed the fuse (which was blown) but lighter still not working. There must be power getting to it as it does illuminate.

The illumination power supply is NOT the same supply that feeds the actual lighter part that you use for lighting ciggys.
The centre console is easy to remove, don't even need a manual really, just obvious screws to undo, then access the rear of the ciggy lighter, you can't simply pull it out of the hold sadly as if I remember rightly the illumination light is clipped onto the side.
Most fail due to crud/rust of the actual live terminal the end of the lighter contacts when pushed in.
Even though I don't smoke I replace in all my cars with new ones, as they may be needed in case of breakdown to power the mobile phone.

Thanks, managed to fix it. Took the radio, ashtray out and the cigarette lighter trim off. Found that the inner part of the lighter had unwound itself from the power supply. So screwed the inner piece back to the outer. Connecting the power lead was a bit fiddly as there's not much room but managed it OK. Probably would have been easier taking the bottom part of the dash off.

Why can't they make it easy so it pushes in from the front!!!
