Default Changing ABS pump - have I got to match part number?

I have got to change an ABS pump on my ST and lad who can supply me with one thinks I need to get the number from mine before hand?

Thing is can't get the bloody number untill pump is removed - quite a big job.

Any body know if it does have to be matched up?

Thanks.
