Default Ideal exhaust configuration

I was just thinking of what exhaust configuration to use on my latest build.

It's for an engine.

I've got two racemufflers but I have to make up the pipes from the heads to the mufflers.

Now you can get systems from something like 50 to 70 mm.

What's the advantage of a bigger bore? Less backpressure but also less velocity no?

And what's better:

2 seperate pipes into two mufflers
2 seperate pipes into two mufflers with a linkpipe
2 seperate pipes into one into one into two mufflers

?

Would like to hear why as well!

Cheers!

I would assume that Ducati did a some research into the best systems using lots of money to do so, so personally I think either keep what ducati used as close as possible, or another after market one used on the same engine.
In short from what I've read/remember smaller bore equals better/lower speed torque, where as bigger bore scores higher up.
There is a formula for working out the ideal bore size, that I found on an american site, that was very enlightening.

Care to share that link?

Thing is, Termignoni sells 50 to 70 mm systems for the same bikes and I'm guessing it will have something tot do with it being race systems or road systems.

The mufflers I have are bot for race use only...oh and they're fitted to a tuned Buell engine so no direct comparison to Ducati then...

Don't need to run mate!!!!!.... Just get your threads in the right place and don't be a cock when being corrected.

Well Mat, I'm always a cock, not just when corrected

I think that header lenght, bore etc. is just as relevant for cars as it is for bikes.
The link that was provided is just as usefull for cars as it is for bikes so...care to stand corrected?

True, but I chose to put it in general discussion where ANYTHING related to cars can be discussed.

Thanks for pointing it out though!

the manufacturer would have a number of criteria to meet such as cost, aesthetics, serviceability, emissions, noise etc, etc that you don't necessarily have to, so i wouldn't assume that at all.

an aftermarket system has to fulfill some criteria as well, but generally speaking you could look at a WSB design as a starting point. although again, torque spread or peak power may be priorities. you just don't know, and they could be on different cams, compression etc.

with exhausts, it's all about the dyno testing.
