Default GTi to XR3i spec??

Hi guys, ive got myself a totally standard 3door GTi, and am looking to bring it up to the spec of my previous 5door. the 5door was previously owned by a member of the XR owners club, and was noticeably quicker than the standard one i now have. im no mechanic, but know by word from other owners that i need the throttle body, cams, MAF sensor and inlet manifold from a 2.0 silvertop, but was wondering if anyone could maybe list anything and everything im going to need to achieve the goal, like i said the current car is completely standard. any help would be great, cheers guys. To be honest mate to get decent power gains from that will cost alot of money, and the gains in comparison to dropping in a turbo lump will be negligible. Unless you specifically want to keep naturally aspirated I'd consider other options as well.

Waste of time and money mate. These parts will bring you up to the so called 130PS spec to give about 130bhp. Only downside is the 130PS cars never actually achieve the claimed 130 and are typically a good 10bhp or so shy.

You would do a lot better to just drop a 2 litre in complete and then you will actually have 130bhp and scope to tune for further gains.

Or get rs2000 running gear.

And for the reckored my rs1800 made 142 bhp at surrey rollers, all it had was a full system, manifold and a healthy head skim, crushed the fpr slightly to raise the rate alittle. Even had standard air box and filter.

What RR was that on. Not saying the figure you claim is wrong but I've never seen a stock one make over 120bhp and a mates extensively modified RS1800 only achieved 135bhp

There's a lot of crap spoke about using these bits and pieces to boost the power of the 115ps 1.8 Zetec.

As said, the 130ps 1.8 usually struggles to make any more than 115bhp and the 115ps usually manages over 120bhp anyway on the more accurate rollers.

As has been said, the best pound for pound upgrade for a genuine increase in power and torque is to fit a 2.0 Zetec.

Surrey rolling road, its a dyno dynamics one so supposed to be good.

It was under 135 before we gave it a bit more fuel. Was very surprised at the results.

Fair do's, bloody good result to be fair mate and certainly the highest figure for so little mods I've come across.

Don't suppose you have the graph, long shot I appreciate.

I have a 130 XR3i and before I tuned it I wanted to make sure that I had a good base. The car barely made 100bhp at the flywheel, but this was down to Cam timing being out and the cheap exhaust. Once this was done it went up to around 120, I then tuned it to around 190 bhp. I chose to keep to 1.8 as I want to do some hillclimbs with it and if I was in the 2.0 and upwards class I would be up against Scoobies etc which would be impossible.

thanks for the input guys, was only considering the "upgrade" option as i thought it would mean less time without the car,and was quite impressed by how much quicker the old 5door was compared to my local GTi's,just wish i knew exactly what it had done to it, had the typical induction kit and stainless, uprated hoses and a power boost valve(though i hear these are pointless on lower powered engines??), apart from that i am clueless to what was changed. between 130 and 170bhp is the figure im hoping to get somehow, not after stupid power and would rather keep it N/A, have considered dropping a 2.0 in, even toyed with the idea of finding an ST170 engine and ancillaries, but have heard that would take a lot of time and money to get right. i heard that the Mondeo silvertop is a pretty straightforward job(for someone who knows how obviously lol), but what about the blacktops, and what is the actual difference in performance to the Silvertop?and to anyone who has had either of these done, how long could i expect the car to be under the knife for!??

I'll have a look for the graph. Was on my old lap top.

Reved clean of the clock the poor little thing. I never had the head of so may have had head work.

Silver top could be done in a day and will give a really 130 on a standard ecu.

After that u need bike carbs or throttle bodies mate.

I can confirm 100% that the ST170 engine is not a straight swap as I've helped my brother do his girlfriends GTi. It was a pig of a job.
