I've been working out how much I've spent so far on a 22 year old Sierra 5 door hatch and it's frightening - nearly £7000
To do a decent job on finishing it I need to spend at least another £4000
It's a hobby I guess

Umm well i guess i had to buy the car, then money got slow... and i have brought some things... Maybe £4000 with the car and thats way over! It only sounds good cos ive had it like 4 months now. by that logic its costing me £1000 a month.

i put up a list on, i think, interford many moons ago listing all the mods i'd done to it prior to it blowing up and, without the last bit of money (i'm still spending money on it and it's not turned a wheel in anger for about 7 years ) it was past the £30k mark

still needs mapping and it would have been sorted, but now it also needs paint, rust issues need sorting out, still needs mapping and the brakes are shot and the rest is looking a bit worse for wear too

25k+ over ten years.
But done everything right 1st time and didn't cut corners which. Could have easily been done.
Things like.....
Harvey Engine, Bernie gearbox, Tommy Field turbo, AP brakes etc all 1st time of asking.
Could have been a lot lot more if I hadn't have listen to advice of people in the know (Mike R, Hadland, Sheedy etc)

It was at topboss for about 4 years, it's been sat in my garden for the past 2 years because I've lost the keys for it
Probably cheaper to buy another car and swap the bits over now than to plough yet more money into it, and with performance cars that will hit 60 in under 6 seconds and will top 155 easily all day every day being virtually a few grand with zero reliability issues, that's the way forward now me thinks

Ive spent a bit on mine and no doubt will spend more. Its our hobby at the end of the day. People spend thousands of pounds on push bikes. People spend loads on a weekend going on the piss. People spend a fortune on fags a year.

what i find funny is all the clearly insane people who spend £30k plus modding their cossie then sell it less than 6 months later at a massive loss cos they got bored Either complete insanity or more money than sense!

Beacuase i get bored and sell all my project cars, ive started recently to be quite shrewd when doing them, and have broke even with the last few, and i actually stand to make money on the sierra if it ever goes. In the past ive spent thousands thou

I agree with that, I always find it strange when people sell project cars when they've only just finished them. Mine owes me somewhere around the 30k mark, but I have absolutely no intentions of selling.

prob about 18k on my last saph,i broke that too cheap and made about £10500 back but it was almost like new,the saph im doing now is a keeper so im spending the money on the best parts now rather than buying something now then upgrading later, spent between £500 and £1500 every week for the past couple of months on it and need to spend another 3k to get it rolling (ap brakes, tyres, fuel system etc),after that some carbon goodies and a respray then a big bhp engine,so prob another 18k to go.better get some o.t in.like i said this 1 is a keeper so if i go to town on it now then ill not want to replace it or do anything more to it as it will have everything and be as mint as i can make it.its a long way off just now though!

It's a scary process adding it all up, but look at it the other way as well, if we had ploughed £10-15,000+ into a brand new (any make) car a few years back what would it be worth now?
So with a lot of the motors we are building there is an investment factor built in.
Well, thats how I'm justifying it
