Default How can you "fix" warped discs

ok, i know that discs dont actually warp and that they are fixable, so... how do you do it and what sort of costs are invoolved?

my prefered fix is to replace the whole lot with performance friction stuff, but that will come close to 1k which i frankly dont have lying around at the moment so what can i do to extend the life of my standard discs/yellowstuff pads?

FYI there is no evident issue with driving normally, but if you stamp on them at 100+ and get them hot they start to judder and the judder doesnt clear till they cool down

This ^^^^^^ would be the best option, there's a reasonable tolerance in the disc for being recut.

As above, get them skimmed does work, although not for very long

Quite correct sir, skimming warped discs is generally a temporary measure, it would seem that once the brake disc has started running out it becomes an inherent trait, & appears to be most enthusiastic in returning to that very state once they've had a jolly good warming.

Personally I'd recommend new discs, but there again I would seeing as it's not my money we're talking about here.

when i had my track m3 i fitted brand new x drilled discs with ds3000 pads and they literally lasted half a trackday before the discs were completely warped to a point i couldnt hold the steering wheel! i had the old discs(original?) re skimmed and they were the same....

i changed the lot for a compbrake set up and they were awesome from then on.

arent the yellowstuff pads a bit harsh for daily use? i had some in an impreza recently and the bite was crap unless they were really hot.

Jim - you could fit some E46 M3 discs, they go straight on with some 840ci 4 Pot Brembos - we've got them on our M3 with Yellowstuff pads and didnt have any braking probs, its a good setup but you like spending the money ha ha

EBC are crap! Get shot as soon as, dads mondeo was the same with them on it, mullered the discs all round, 1k might sound steep but you should never skimp on brakes.

Interesting as I had yellow stuff pads on my M3 evo and they were cock on. Shit for the first couple of stops when cold but great otherwise. If they judder I bet it's because they are too far gone to skim, do they have black spots on them?

Discs don't warp, they suffer from DTV, disc thickness variation, so once "warped" always will be.
Hi Spec skimmed some discs for me a few years back, he skimmed one side, took the disc out spun it round re mounted in lathe and did the other side what a t**t!!
Most are killed by not bedding the pads in, the pad material is actually transferred to the disc during the first miles, but makers advice must be followed as all different.
I use yellows, even with ice on the road, and can honestly say I've never noticed them "needing" warming up, true they do get slightly better with a few presses, but are still awsomely effective when cold ime.

i would hazzard a guess that the calipers are at fault here if they are juddering when you stop in a hurry

strip them down, clean up the sliding surfaces and pins and see what happens

it's cheaper than buying new stuff, unless you break something

Excuse me if I am being a bit thick here, but surely skimming the disks will reduce their effectiveness and reliability? Ie, there is less mass in the disks to absorb heat and could even weaken them?

Are the pads alright Jim? If so, buy some OE replacement discs and they'll last the track day easy, if you're reasonably competent at slowing down with gearbox then you shouldn't put too much stress on them mate.

Cheers,
Grant
