Any petrol car first used on, or after 1 August 1992 has to have a CAT.

If you can pass the stricter MoT emissions without a CAT then you 'can' get away with it, but I don't know anyone who has done so on a petrol car.

My 1996 RS 2000 passed the mot for 6 years with no cat.

NO YEAR CAR HAS TO HAVE A CAT.
It is NOT a legal requirement, it's just most will not pass the stricter emissions from 92 or so without one, but if they do then it's fine.

As said you dont need to have one, just cars that were a new model from 1992 onwards have to meet a stricter emissions test. Although models that were already in production dont have to comply until 1995 sometime. A fact not well known, but I have a 93 Suzuki Samurai as an offroader which came from the factory without one. Only 95+ ones had a cat.

Bullshit

If that was the case then why is it an endorsable offence if you are stopped and the petrol driven vehicle is found to have had the CAT removed?

The only vehicles that do not legally require a CAT are those powered by heavy oil/diesel.

as above I was pulled and ordered to go to station for traffics to look over car as it was loud. Luckily they didnt have a clue as car was too low to see. But warned me if my car didnt have a cat Id have the book thrown at me. That was a 96 escort si. Told me there and then it had to have a cat from aug 92 onwards. Had a fiesta si recently went for mot and guy wudnt pass it till I put cat on. Was a cunt as it had a 4 branch on so had to switch them

Not bullshit at all, Tabetha is absolutely on the money. You can't be done for removing the cat only for not meeting the required emissions regulations. There is no legislation that states a vehicle must have a CAT. If you can achieve emissions within the required levels without the CAT you are fully legal. Unfortunately it's nigh on impossible to meet the regs without one

There is no emissions data available for Suzuki vehicles, strange but true.

Whoever told Jamesyrs that they'd throw the book at him is talking arse, there's some rovers out there that are allowed a precat test up to 1997!

I put an escort cabby on a k plate through and it failed on emissions and they diagnosed lambda or cat, turned out to not have either fitted,so they pre cat tested it and all was well.

Suzuki vitara cabs had no cats fitted and even had carbs on up to about 96 so a precat test was required.

i need to check my escos then as its a 1992 j reg so i may be able to get away with it

but isnt it the case if you fit an engine thats earlier than the car you dont require a cat as long as you can prove what the engine came out of

That's right - it's the car or engine they go on - whichever is earlier. Eg a 1996 car with 1991 engine would have the basic emissions test and likewise a 2010 engine in a 1989 car has the basic test.

My 1993 k reg xr4x4 had the basic test once it had the 24v engine which I assured them was from a 1991 car!

As Tabs stated. There is no legal requirement to have a CAT. Only to pass post 92 emissions regulations if your car is newer.

noise has fuck all to do with cats also as they are not designed to silence vehicles in anyway way,,,,,,,, but lets be honest the police dont have a fucking clue about the laws they enforce hence they arrest you and speak to there solicitors/cps to see if they are allowed to charge you or not which is why generally they offer a caution/fixed penalty as we generally just do as we are told by the police

ginge your spot on they dont have a clue, after they said this to me I told them to do something or do one as I had enough of being harassed by the police in my town, and guess what I never heard another thing, they dont even think of pulling me in rs for some reason now.
