MK2 XR2 or MK4 XR3i?
Hey Guys,
I'm looking at getting either a Fiesta XR2 or Escort XR3i (MFI cause I've heard they are better than the EFI) and I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on either one to go for? It's not for uber modding just for getting around in (or i would have gone for the RS Turbo). Does the XR2 come as an XR2i?
Also, would it be better to insure them with a classic specific insurer like Adrian Flux or do a normal Aviva jobby?

I would say you have a far better chance at finding a half decent mk4 xr3i than a mk2 xr2, but even they are few and far between. I would say the 3i is slighly more refined as a daily too. Check for rust, rust and more rust! They do have a habbit of looking ok from the outside but once you start proding and poking things usually end up in tears on any mk4 lol! What is your budget? As for the EFi thing, if you find one in good running order then it's the one to go for IMO.

The EFi XR3i is identical mechnanically to the XR2i Fiesta. The EFi was only really problematic on the Webber ISCV cars, a lot of these were sorted under wwarantee by Ford. The Hitachi valve sorted the issue. My old XR2i got a kicking all the time and never put a foot wrong up until a mong drove into the back of it.
imho I would take a Mk2 XR2 over a Mk4 XR3i as they are a lot more fun but they are also a lot more crude and have a Mechano feel to their build.

Ive got both (well, ones a mk1 xr2) and the fiesta is sooo much better than the 3i!! Dont get me wrong, i love me 3i but its jus not as cool as the fiesta!! I only bought the 3i cos it was stupidly cheap, has done alrite but its got recaros, s1 wheels, and its had 2 engines!! The one in it is about to die as well so will be engine number 3!!
Mine is mfi and a mate as a efi 3i, his one is alot quicker, and 100 times better on fuel!!

i have both xr2 and xr3i. rather my xr3i if it was to be my daily.
but the xr2 is great fun, and easy to drive when just using for A to B.
TBA it would be hard to pick one over the other. xr2 seems a lot better on juse tought.
Also my RS Firsta, EFI, is by far the best drive, more comfort, good on fuel driving right.
id imagine the xr2i would be much the same drive, i think it would make a far better daily out of the 3.
Also xr2i was 1.6 CVH 89>94
mid 94>95 they were 1.8L 16v efi

Right ok, pretty much equal opinions here. My budget is roughly £1500-£2000 at most. I've seen some nice ones for sale but the choice is really hard. An '88 MK4 is an MFI right?
Also is £2000 a lot for a XR2 or 3i?

XR2 for sure? I haven't many if any around so it is kinda getting the vote atm. On insurance do you guys just TPFT or Fully Comp? Might be a stupid question atm but I'm currently driving an '07 Yaris which needed fully comp so I'm not sure about the older car.
So the only things to look out for on the XR2 are rust and check the Carb is clean and rust free?

My first car was a h plate xr3i efi with an rs turbo bodykit, apparently it was chipped and it also had a big bore 4 exhaust along with 90 spec recaro interior, and rs turbo wheels, only thing it didn't have were the bonnet louvres, although i always got told nice rs turbo mate and commented on what a nice car it was,it was quicker than my mates 3i mfi even with the oversized exhaust and my clocks showed 130 enough times although they're known to be inaccurate,I loved it too bits,I also went in an xr2i which has the efi engine which was just as quick, depends what body shape u prefer as engine wise there's not alot in it.

I'm gonna go for an XR2 once I've got the cash together. I'll avoid D reg's and look out for rust everywhere. Is there any spots they are prone to rust (arches etc)?

Inner wings all by battery tray and everywhere, front arches, sills rear arches, boot oh and son forget around the sunroof, pretty much anywhere on the car could be rotten! They are great!!!

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
i kinda like both
but as an every day car the escort will be more comfortable
but the fiesta is way more fun and never get boring to throw around
so xr2 all the way
just check for rot between the bumpers

With your budget i think you will find a better 3i as good XR2s seem to be fetching more money at the moment than 3is.
If i had to pick one i think i would go for the 3i but hopefully you will enjoy owning either. Good luck and put pics up when you get whatever you decide on.

I've had a mk3 XR3i and a mk2 XR2 and to be honest i preferred the 3i. It seems a slightly more refined car but saying that i still loved the XR2 and it was a great fun car. With a few basic mods the XR2 felt much nippier than the 3i but was not as quick top end.

Ive had an MFI XR3i, XR3i Cabrio, XR2 XR2i and out of them
XR3i was a good reliable drive, I really enjoyed having it.
XR3i Cabrio was my fave, handled like a bag of shite in comparison to the rest, but couldn't beat the roof down.
The XR2 was brilliant fun, brilliantly reliable, easy to fix an maintain, but for day to day use was a bit too uncomfortable.
The XR2i for me combined the best of the XR2 and the XR3i.
But in answer to your question, XR2 all day long for something thats just fun.
