Regarding mk4 XR3is, this one is in your budget and doesn't sound bad.

I've had them all and for putting a grin on your face it's got to be the mk2 xr2. The handling is awesome as standard but a set of decent shocks and springs and they are just like a go cart. So much better than the escorts

Ive had an MFI XR3i, XR3i Cabrio, XR2 XR2i and out of them
XR3i was a good reliable drive, I really enjoyed having it.
XR3i Cabrio was my fave, handled like a bag of shite in comparison to the rest, but couldn't beat the roof down.
The XR2 was brilliant fun, brilliantly reliable, easy to fix an maintain, but for day to day use was a bit too uncomfortable.
The XR2i for me combined the best of the XR2 and the XR3i.
But in answer to your question, XR2 all day long for something thats just fun.

Yes,mk2 xr2 all the way or as stated a mk3 xr3i but good ones of them are fetching silly money.
The xr2i is a big disappointment all round compared to the xr2 which are great little cars and handle really well, reliable, economical and certainly feel quick!!!the comfort issue is quickly sorted with some Rs turbo recaros and a nice steering wheel.the steerings not too heavy and should you wish to modify it,there's millions of routes to go down,2.0l zetec, zvh, turbo efi/mfi,turbo zetec if you really wanna go for it!!!
I reckon they'll only go up in value as well.

All it had was a Janspeed manifold and exhaust system and an ITG air filter. As i said the mods were basic but as soon as the replacement filter went on it was noticeably a lot more responsive.
