Default heater broken - no hot air.

Hi,

my heater packed in - only blows cold air.
very annoying since my windows mist up all the time!

ford fiesta - 1996 1.8d mk4 endura de . without aircon.

wondering if anybody has any ideas as to what I need to check.
maybe related to some work I did on my car? - I have recently bled the radiator and put in new antifreeze mix . Also took off the air pipes when taking off the rocker cover.the two pipes that run into the center of the car under bonnet seem ok - one was hot and the other cold.
the heater motor seems ok because the air comes in fast but very cold!.

thanks in advance

Ian

heater matrix or air lock in the system?

does the car get upto temp ok? if not could be water pump/thermostat or even head gasket

Sounds like an air lock in the heater matrix, with the heater set to hot, give the two pipes that run to the matrix a hard pump with your hand to try and get any trapped air moving.

More than likely this, VERY common fault. Just renewed the one on my runaround Puma.

At this time of the year, think I'd be tempted to route around it for now, so it just has hot water flow all the time, much better than cold.
I always hear of these valves going up the swanny, pity ford changed from the old air deflector design, did the job, and no water valve to bugger up.

My sisters has the same fault if its the heater valve it will only blow hot! The two pin plug should have 12v on one pin and no more than 1v on the other when the dial is in the cold position then 12 on both when in the hot position also the resistance across the valve solenoid should be 5 - 25 ohms! when the ingnition is on u should feel the solenoid clicking if u unplug it and plug it back in u may find its a wireing fault between the control pannel and the valve as i put a valve on my sisters and it did fuck all!

Heater control valve, bet my car on it. Always the cause on Fiesta's and Puma's, they're shit! End of.

Normally situated in the centre of the scuttle panel. Looks like this...

take the valve off and throw it in the bin, get two short lengths of copper pipe of the correct bore and put in place of the heater valve and enjoy both the hot air and the fact that you never have to replace it again

ajamesc i bet your sisters heater matrix is blocked

No my sisters has 0v on pin 2 of the plug to the heater valve when in the hot position so the soleniod is not moveing the small plunger across to let the hot water move round the system lol. And if u do as u say what u going to do in the summer when its hot out and your car is blowing hot air lol
