Default Diesal estate for £1000-2000???

Hi,

Im looking for a diesal estate and have been considering a audi a6 tdi 2.5, renault laguna 2.2dci, and maybe a alfa romeo 156 2.4jtd.

Not driven any of them yet, would like to know of any problems to look out for on these? what they like to drive etc?, Also will i fit being that im about 6'8 and just the wrong side of 20st lol.

Im basically after something big and got some go in it. Any other estates to consider? Max price is 2k, also prefer manual but might consider auto.

hope you can help

cheers
benn

Avoid laguna's with high mileage, i have had 2 of them this year to carry our fishing gear and both have just been over the 100k mark and both have had the gearbox eat themselves.

Can the car be any age?

There are a few late e36 320d tourings to chose from
tidy e34 touring or tatty e39 tourings are both well within budget.
Audi's ,alfa's etc will be pricey when things go wrong so personally would give them a swerve.

i would have mondeo, or slightly larger galaxy, driven both and both are nice, depends how much space you need in the estate, galaxy was better on diesel than mondeo, i know the galaxy is more a 7 seater than an estate, but they are a lot more use than a normal estate, and for 2k you couild get a ghia x with all the toys

If you can find one, an Omega 2.5TD Estate in CDX or Elite trim level... IMO, you won't get a better, more high spec, massive load lugger than one of those. Downside is, getting one with anything other than moon miles can be tough.

Cheers,

Avoid renault's full stop!

I'd go for a 1.9 tdi 130 audi, 2.5 tdi's do gearboxs and turbos at 100'000 miles

Omegas are nice and engines (bmw) \/ \/ but getting an old car now otherwise would suit you to a T

as said 406 hdi estate. I.ve had a saloon for 4 years and covered 120k miles. Mostly above 50miles per gallon. Try and go for the 2.2 if you want something quick. They are 136 horse power. But the 2.0 110 like mine is perfect for everyday use

I know mate, couldn't believe the price when I saw you stick it up on here... wasn't surprised that it sold within hours to be honest.

Thanks for the replys.

Ive considered a merc but not sure on them, bit scared of buying a car with over 200k miles lol, although i know they good for a lot more.
As for a pug 406, really dont like them tbh.

Dont want a ford either lol.

As for an omega, yeah would consider one but as you say finding one without galactic miles is hard and i want a manual aswell really.

Im liking the A6 the most tbh.

Ginge, still have the saph but its gonna be stripped and sold of this year, have a family now and not got the spare cash to finnish it.

the 2.5 omega diesels are more uneconomical than the 2.2 dti omegas.
also you can;t buy in the uk a auto 2.2 dti omega as they are all manuals.

the audis are ok but everyone i know who has had one has found out the hard way they cost a fortune to fix when they go wrong.

the omegas are opels and that means german built and german quality and they are better than mercs the same age and i know because i have seen mercs 97 onwards in shit condition falling apart. they are not as good as old mercs that were bullet proof

really good low miles omega diesels sell very well also as the caravan club reccomend them for pulling big caravans on there comparison website.

the old 307 got crashed so bought a 406 estate executive. its a 2.0 110 got alot of toys on it. averaging 42mpg, it does about 120/125ish mph flat out and its really comfy!!! leather heated electric seats etc and its done 160k!! serviced though with stamps from new might be a reason for that though.
the mpg is abit disappointing but cant fault it! and the 307 was a 2.0 110 and had done 125K and a track day :') and was also faultless
the derv pugs arent that bad.
