i was never a big fan of diesel but had to buy one cos i got a new job and meant a bit of as commute. i wanted a mk4 golf but couldnt insure one cos im 19 so i bought an 05 bora highline 130 and after about a week had it remapped at AMD essex and was rollingroaded at 172 bhp and 262lb/ft torque and it pulls like a fuckin train. suprises alot of people in fairly quick motors and i averaged 70mpg in it once!. i have had alot of problems due to the map tho, a clutch, 2 gearbox mounts and a headgasket (its only done 60k!)

I'll probably end up going derv but I'm fearful of anything too modern as they seem to break at the drop of a hat and cost a lot to get repaired.

I think it'll be something a tad older like a passat tdi or BMW 325tds for me.

My company cars are all dirty derv powered piles of BMW junk. I would have to do considerable miles to contemplate one of my own. In fact no, I couldn't spend my own hard earned money on one. Of course it helps that I only do around 30 mile a week in my own car.

I''m prolly pushing 135-140bhp with my roverron box but it pulls like a bitch.
It spins up all day in the wet in 3rd and nailed away from a 1.8 20v turbo'd leon dooodaaa thing the other day in a cloud of smoke.
Im still doing 35mpg on full chat and its great.

Dont get me wrong it sounds shite compared to a turbo petrol car but the grin factor is amazing.
Now i know dervs more expensive than petrol but i still get more mpg that a petrol so happy days

who else thinks the derv tuning is the future
i wouldnt have anything else for everyday use, cant beat modern diesels

my 1.25 does 45 mpg - i can't see you getting much cheaper than that from a diesel if you have to take into account cost of another car, depreciation etc

Made the switch from my RS4 and Cayenne Turbo into a pair of log burning Beemers. Got an E91 M Sport Estate and an E60 M Sport Saloon. Both got the later 177 2.0 Diesel engine.

Have to say the its an amazingly good little engine with plenty of go.

As you can imagine my fuel bill is now significantly less too but I do miss the trackdays in the Cayenee!!!

ive been lookin at diesels for a while now,i did fancy a focus or mondeo mk3 TDCi but heard so much bad feedback about the dual mass flywheels and the 4 figure sum repair bill that comes with them when they go ive been looking at vectra C diesel turbos now, my brother has an 04 reg SRi CDTi 150bhp paid 3k for it, looks the business aswell.still undecided as of yet!

I'ver got an 07 plate astra van 1.3 diesel. It cost me Ł2200 from auction, had no clutch as it was ex rental but has been serviced to the hilt and i get Ł140 miles round town out of Ł20 quid.
I love it its really hard to beat that for a daily to work and back.

I had a Mondeo ST-TDCi a long time ago, and utterly hated it. Noisy, confused gearing and not particularly refined. The choice of vehicle for the work fleet is the 1.8TDCi Focus estate. Fine at what it does, but it's terrible at low speeds and find myself having to change down to 1st for corners that should really be comfortable 2nds. The work cars aren't even very reliable!

Quite happy with the day to day petrol car - I only do 50 miles or thereabouts a week, so diesel is not worth the extra outlay to me.

I can't see me ever buying a petrol car again TBH. I went from an ST200 to a TDCI Mondeo and although the Mk3 has had more than its fair share of issues (many of them have been because I crashed it!) there's no way I'd swap back. The TDCI is quicker, much more frugal and much easier to drive quickly.

People complain about the power delivery, but I find it suits my driving style really well - you can squirt along on a sea of torque and not have to rev the nuts off it to get anywhere. That said the 'linear-ness' of the delivery detracts from the sensation of speed. The mid range punch is fantastic though, and for overtaking they're superb.

As for the cost - agreed they do tend to cost more when they go wrong - but it's not like petrol cars are imune to costly breakages.

By far the worst thing is the sound though. They all sound shit.

having been a fan of land rover v8's i sold both mine this year and bought a 2.5 bmw engined auto p38 range rover.

fuel economy is double what i got out of a petrol (12mpg in petrol and about 24mpg in the diesel) it will almost reach 30mpg on a run, but i only do about 50 miles a week so all short trips.

the noise does piss me off, as does the poor starting when hot, and the various running problems that as a normal mechanic i can't really test anything easily, it's going to need to go to a bosch dealer or land rover as i suspect its fuel pump but at about Ł700 for the part it's not something i'm just going to guess at.

The grubby fuel pump nozzle annoys me as does that side of the pump always has spilt diesel all over the floor.

I think lpg v8 could be the way forward for me.....
