Default whos turned to diesel

Ive bought my first derv this year and im loving it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now just remember its a 2004 1.8tdci lynx engine so its shite compared to whats around now but.......
Im loving it................................................

I''m prolly pushing 135-140bhp with my roverron box but it pulls like a bitch.
It spins up all day in the wet in 3rd and nailed away from a 1.8 20v turbo'd leon dooodaaa thing the other day in a cloud of smoke.
Im still doing 35mpg on full chat and its great.

Dont get me wrong it sounds shite compared to a turbo petrol car but the grin factor is amazing.
Now i know dervs more expensive than petrol but i still get more mpg that a petrol so happy days

who else thinks the derv tuning is the future

Got an Omega 2.2DTi CD on an 03 plate for smoking about and going to work and back in - Cost me sub 1k, does 45mpg all day long and runs sweet as a nut on bio-diesel

Just a shame the insurnace is a right steep incline this year with it going up for everyone :/

Also for the weekend toy got an L200 Warrior specced up for major offroad use, only problem is that only does about 18mpg on a good day due to the tyres and other weighy add-ons and a thirsty 2.5 TDI engine Still runs on Bio tho

I did............ perhaps not you and i used to own a golf gti turbo so im not surprised as it was the slowest big pile of shite i have ever drove or owned so i cant imagine a leon being much different apart from having an even worse dashboard

ow and i had it remapped to 190 bhp and i still sold it within a month. Give me a mk2 golf gti any day

Fair enough id prefer a focus rs but the cost of running compared to a derv must be ŁŁŁŁŁŁŁŁŁŁŁŁŁŁŁŁŁŁŁ.

Not that bad Ł55 in the focus does 270 mile Ł55 in the Ibiza was 420 same driving. The extra miles was not worth it IMO.

perhaps not but if you add up the extra fuel, tax, insurance and service cost its alot.

Ok dont get me wrong if i could afford a foci rs id have one but in this climate...........fuel keeps going up tax insuance ect.
Im too scared buy one that why im running a derv for now. It pulls me in the seat without the cost.
Thats why im asking..................
I went from a 200 bhp rs turbo and im happy with my derv

I have a 120d and although it doesnt sound as nice as my mates 6cyl 320 (which is the 2.2) it is marginally quicker and gets 43mpg average compared to 24mpg.

For day to day, I don't think you can beat a modern diesel.

I've had various petrol cars before, turbo and nasp hot hatches mainly. As my annual mileage crept up to the point where I was doing over 30,000 a year I decided to go to the darkside.

Truth be told - I don't ever think i'll own a petrol daily driver again. I had a 53 plate Mk 4 Golf GT TDi 150 with a remap, was 200bhp+ and 300lb/ft+, average mpg across a tank was 45mpg.

I got a fair offer for that about a month ago so picked up an 01 plate E46 330d tourer, bog standard it's returning around 42mpg across a tank and its 187bhp out the box!

For me now, turbocharged petrol cars are weekend toy territory!

We have just bought a vw touran 20tdi 170 bhp. And I'm loving it even Helen is lead footed in it! For a big old bus it's quick. And at average 40mpg you can't knock it. And the mother in law fills it up on her fuel card now and then!!!!

Been driving Diesel BMW's for years, 6 cylinders are so smooth and torquey. If I had to buy an everyday car it would be one of these.

Love my Mondeo ST TDci now I've had it a while.

It's normally just used to plod back and forth to work getting 50-55mpg but if you floor it when the torque band is in, and it's great fun.

I'd say the style of driving is different to a petrol in that it's more relaxed and progressive if that makes sense, probably as it's about the torque at relatively low rpm compared to high bhp at higher rpm.

well, when i start the new job near the end of the month my works shit slow vivaro will be going back. its a 1.9ctdi and takes 85l to fill at about Ł110 a pop.

i would have beenusing the 3dr to commute, but as some wanker used me as a brake and wrote it off im going to be needing a work runbout very soon!

was looking at classic impreza's etc, but the fooking insurance is a joke, almost double to what the 397bhp 3dr was

so a dirty diesel will be considered if the fooking insurance settles up.....

My company hack is a 2.0 diesel Mondy (New shape) in fact all of my company cars have been dervs. I like the low to mid range punch and relaxed cruising ability. Unfortunately they all seem to run out of puff to early but the six speed box on the Mondy makes up for it a little. The future though isnt diesel its lower capacity turbo'd petrols. Emmisions regs and the expense of producing filtering products will kill diesel off IMO.
Being able to squeeze nearly 650 miles out of a tank even when driving in a spirited fashion its the part I will miss the most about diesels

I had a mk4 escort 1.8D(n/a) that did about 45mpg when I got it, some pump tweaks later far more torque and 55mpg, 112mph(indicated), must admit acceleration was painful, used the binoculars to look ahead for cars before overtaking, but did the job and must admit did love it, even though it did break down a few times, due to previous owners bodges.
No way in hell would I swap it for a the cossie though, nor any diesel I would rather pay more to do less miles in the cossie as I enjoy that than more miles in a car I didn't enjoy, no matter how fast.

I went diesel and have now gone back again to petrol

The premium on a diesel car over a petrol means with the mileage I do i'd never make the difference back in fuels saving, especially now that diesel is a clear 3p or so a litre more than unleaded when it used to be cheaper

Plus I get to enjoy revs again and I dont sound like i'm driving a farm vehicle when its cold

If I did enough miles i'd go diesel again tho

Unless I did big miles then I wouldn't go anywhere near anything tractor powered, fuel is more expensive, modern diesels tend to be quite unreliable, servicing is more expensive, when it goes wrong it is generally more expensive etc etc etc.

I do a lot less miles than I used to now, probably only fill the car up about once every 3-4 weeks!

Tabs I can't see how you can even try to compare a 15 year old N/A home bodged diesel escort to a cossie (which for the vast majority now are WEEKEND cars) or anything even remotely modern as far as diesels go, would be like comparing a Sopwith Camel to the Eurofighter

I've got a 56 plate Mk 5 Golf Tdi with 140 bhp from the factory that I may well get mapped over next couple of months. It's currently returning 49.9 mpg across the board which is majority town driving and occasional longer mway trips and I love it. For what it is it pulls very well, and I'm sure could embarrass quite a lot of things once mapped.
