Doesn't meet the "Desirables" above but for the first three it does... that being a Focus, a car that is ultra reliable and practical I can not rate them high enough. Thats what i would say if you could stretch your budget a bit.
Tbh with that budget there are not a lot of cars I can easily think of that could satisfy all your needs.

the headgasket probs were due to plastic waterpumps, if its been replaced there should be no probs, my pal has a r reg one that ticked over to 180k over xmas an is still as smooth as mine

I dont like them when they are flat beds like that with no rear bodies. You say you need a car for the school run etc? I take it you only have 1 kid if your contemplating a 2 seat vehicle

Fair enough then. buy ans mr2. theyre cheap and fairly lively. mate ha d a 2.0 g limited import years ago an d it was quite good. his dad had the uk gti version at the same time and the import was much quicker. think they were more power than the uk version too

just get something that works, rev the fuck out of it and bin it.
for that reason i bought a seat ibiza gti, not particularly quick, or great on fuel, but reliable and didn't mind chucking all sorts of shit in the boot.
now don't need it as i bought a bora tdi.
