What a bizzarre place to put the turbo, wonder why they did that, or is it a really long set of headers on an N/A variant?

Bizzarre either way but they obviously had a good reason for doing so!

Filter still on the right though, big IC etc..


Seems odd but as you say I'm sure they had a good reason !

I presume that pic isn't from back in the day and its off a slighly worse for wear museum piece !

Certainly looks more like an intercooler core than a radiator one.

I saw one of the astra 4wd cars in about 1997 at the vauxhall plant at elsemere port - pretty much a weapon of a thing in its day

Opel needed an instant 500bhp to test the Xtrac transmision and the general workings of their group S car (Astra/Kadett 4S) before they did the Paris-Dakar rally raid, this was after a rallycross G4 was shipped out to Germany for assessment.
They purchased a Zakspeed power plant (modified Ford BDT).
Opel did the Paris-Dakar with two cars fitted with SWRE built naturally aspirated manta 400 engines, one car broke reverse gear stuck in the sand, the other nose dived off a sand dune.
Both cars finished but in low places as they took hours to repair.

there's clearly a turbo on that opel as it's hanging off the front of the cylinder head and the headers go to it and then the exhaust comes out and runs around the inner wing with the boost pipe clearly going from the behr intercooler to the inlet plenum. it looks a right mess, but guess it worked and was needed to be done like that for heat management reasons.
