Default any disadvantages of using a 2wd water pump instead of a 4x4 item?

I am running a 200 block in the fiesta, and i am not using any heater matrix or standard oil modine cooler set up,

The 4x4 water pumps seem to be about £120 on average and the 2wd pumps £65 on average, as i have the choice of using either i wondered if there was any benefit of using one over the other? Or am i forgetting anything?

I see it as the 2wd water pump is cheaper to buy new, the thermostat housing is available new still from burtons and i wont have to mess around with the awkward small hose joiner you have on the 4x4 thermostat housing to water pump.

I have been told it does not matter that the 2wd is a 2 bolt housing (although there were some 3 bolt versions made) as the holes line up and will still seal with the gasket so no problem there,

Can anyone else point out anything i am missing etc as this is my first cossie engine so got a lot to learn.

do the 2wd and 4wd water pumps flow the same and is it true that the pinto water pump and cosworth pump are the same?

thanks
Marc

Not sure about flow between 2wd and 4wd but pinto and 2wd cos are not the same anyway, it fits, but the body of the cossie one is alot deeper-therefor id imagine the impellor is bigger & so will flow more. Also the cossie one weighs more than the pinto one-maybe heavier casting?or because of the bigger impellor.

Marc, the 4x4 cooling system was introduced to basically stop owners cooking the head from cold..... in a 2wd cooling system the cylinder head is not cooled until the stat starts to open, this aint a problem if you warm up the car properly and don`t hoof the shit out of it when cold but a lot of 2wd gasket failures and head problems were attributed to people not warming the motor properly and driving it hard.....

The 4x4 system circulates water around the head from start up and so gives it a better chance of survival if it gets abused, so if you look after your motor and always warm it up properly then the 2wd cooling system will be just fine for you mate

the 4x4 pump flows substantially more than the 2wd one
the 4x4 and rs500 pumps flow the same
there was a gpa 2wd pump which flowed more than a std 2wd but not as much as the 4x4 and rs500
you only have to look at the difference in impeller size to see the flow rate differences
a std 2wd cooling system works surprisingly well

they suffer with cavitation
we all know how ford love to use the parts bin for all their new models because they are tight so for them to use a specially cast pump and impeller has to tell you something

seems like the 4x4 option is the better way to go then even though the pumps are double the price its money well spent,

Like Tony says Marc, the flow rate is a lot better than 2wd so if you`re gonna use it hard on track etc, the extra money is well spent

up to 500hp I leave the original pump on the car after that 4wd is what I would use.

Why are 4x4 water pumps so bloody dear for. I think some parts companys just put the cosworth vat on the price.
