Tyre chains are only £30 and apart from the snow normal tyres can handle the majority of other winter weather even for us in the north

And you'll break your tyres as well..

Insurance companies can't say that Winter tyres will affect your insurance unless the car manufacturer specificaly states that only one make /type of tyre is suitable for the car and they don't for most cars.

Exotics maybe, but I doubt Winter tyres are available for them.

Belongs in the same pile as 3 points for snow on your roof...Busted..

Actually a insurer can refuse to pay out in a claim, as the car didn't originally come with winter tyres(unless it did of course), in the event of an accident, the risk is based on a standard car.

Not exactly. Winter wheels & tyres are homologated for the car so as long as the fitment is appropriate there is no problem. Wheel choice should be as spec'd, same size/tyre as originally supplied shouldn't be a problem nor a normal fitment eg. 15" steel.

Some cars have a specific homologated winter wheel to use (eg. Mk1 Focus RS used ST170 alloy for winter) but this is generally rare.

There will always be some fitment specified and as such it is a 'standard' component to use as defined by the manufafturer.

Bear in mind that - depending where you are in Europe - there are definite penalties for not having proper wheels fitted, while the 'modification' argument isn't quite so strong.

If in doubt consult with your insurer.

Fitting ANY tyre other than original is a modification. Usually one for lesser ability in most cases, yet is there ever a fuss about that ?

Insurance is a big fucking scam. End of story. I hope every insurance company burns to the ground, along with the government who force them on us.
