i think the total excess for anyone under the age of 21 drving at the time was £4-500, no more than that.
did me fine for 2 years then i got a 1.6 escort, was 19 and cost me £700 to insure 3pf+t with 0 ncd. that was 3 years ago now.

try a skoda pick up or something like that, about a grand for a tidy one and very unlikley to have a bad claim history and its cheap to upgrade to top spec car interior etc without insurance hassles
or a vw caddy or similar
also means he is less likely to get egged on by 3 mates to do stupid stuff, worth its weight that is!

Good luck...
You wont have any.
My bro had to wait till he was 19 and got his insurance on a 1.25 Zetec Fiesta 98 on an S for £2700 with my mom as a named driver.
PS - that is this year. current. only had the car for maybe 3 months.
I looked everywhere for him.
I tried every car you can think of from 1978 to 2008 with 850 - 1.3 engines.
Cheapest cars are
Fiat Panda ( old style )
Chinquechento
Sceiciento ( or what ever its called )
And I wouldn't wish either of those cars on anyone.

my lad has a 1.0 corsa and that came out at 1400-00 with admiral on a 10 month bonus accelerator policy 10 months and he gets 1yrs ncd
it runs out at the end of this month so will see how much it is over the next week or so
i have been getting quotes for my other son on the same 1.0 corsa and there starting at 2800-00 for a 17 year old on a provisional

I used Quinn Direct when i starting driving, as did most of my pals the same age. As folk have said they are usually pretty good for young/new/first time drivers.
They did my Rover Metro 1.1 for circa 1100 quid, compared with the 2k upwards everyone else was quoting.

All i can say is good luck! i passed in april 2008 at 24 years old and had a pug 306 d turbo insured with swinton later found out they were cunts, 5 months after passing my test i bought an escort gti and insured it with quinn at £1480, I then gave that to my mrs earlier this year and bought myself a mk5 escort 1.3 popular quinn then sent me a renewal this year in jusly for £800 tpft as the above 2 cars were tpft so i insured it with co op,
Anyway that was costing me £34 a month for the escort pop but i was fuked off with no power steering etc so i bought a ka a couple of weeks ago also a 1.3 and the bastards are charging me £59 per month,
Basically the point is i've got 2 years ncd now as opposed to last years 1 year and now im paying more! To top that off for me to insure the mrs's gti (the same car i had 5 months after passing my test) its more for me to insure it now im over 25 and have 2 years ncd than it was 5 months after i passed my test, Go figure,
Oh and to cancel my policy with co op the bastards wanted £180 so im stuck with payin 60 quid a month on a fuckin ka!!! Rant over many appologies, Good luck to you and your son genuinely i'll keep my eye on this to see how ya get on.

my son has just passed and was getting quotes above 3.5k from everywhere for his 106. we found a policy that won't let him drive between 11pm and 5am (they fit a tracker to make sure!) and this brought the price down to 1300. not ideal but a lot cheaper until he gets some no claims. let me know if you want the details and i'll dig it out for you

There's probably some human rights law that doesn't allow them to do anything with details like that though. It probably is just about the 11-5 detail.

Insurance does seem to go up and down in waves. When I was 15/16 it was the early 90's and it was very expensive to insure any performance cars. I'm sure this was nearing the end of a lot of performance car thefts, lots of cossies etc used to get nicked. I remember me & a mate got a quote on a golf gti and it was going to be about £2500, we were gutted because we were determined to own one at 18. Then in the next couple of years it went flying down and seemed really cheap by the time we were driving. I insured my 1st car for about £700, I bought a mk1 golf gti when I was 18 (as did my best mate) and I insured mined for £680! Imagine that nowadays! I remember my mate at 19 getting a quote for £900 for a sapphire cossie.

Something important that I should have mentioned: If you get him to stick a more experienced driver on the policy - yourself or his Mum - it'll bring the premium down a fair bit. I put my Mum on my policy for the Subaru I had when I was 20 and it took a fairly significant chunk off the premium. I guess they just assume that they may be driving it some of the time, which will be less time for the main (less experienced) driver to cause any damage!

Since the start of this year. no one will accept a direct debit off me as im 17 they reckon that they cant do a credit rating on my card untill im 18 so they wont take any payment :/ so it has to go as one lump sum even though they give you a quote as monthly payments.

I'm 22 and still pay £1300, it's a joke, do his own policy and put you and your mrs on his policy, it works, knocked about 500 quid off for me by adding my rents...
I'm with elephant now but ad flux was about the only people who would insure me when I started-was in a xr2 tho and paid 2800 first year!!!

hi,
my first piece of advice is that you should find your local IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists). enrol your son on the IAM advanced driving course.
This is not like a 'pass plus' type affair, that isnt worth a jot. the IAM uses former police drivers to teach advanced car handling and awareness.
Insurance companies will look favourably if you have passed this particular course/test and it could save you a fair whack off any premium.
secondly, dont get any car over 1.0L engine size. go for a micra or something similar
thirdly, i think you can get a 6 month policy that entitles you to a 15% discount after 6 months if no claim from some providers. they dont advertise this, but its worth asking if they do when you call for quotes.
This would mean a 15% discount for the 2nd part of the year (the 2nd 6 months) and therefore, a cheaper premium over the full year!!

how about a bmw E30? , im 25, 7yrs NCB, i was insuring a 1988 316 (1.8) for £200 a year (group 15), that died so i bought a 2001 fiesta zetec (1.25, group 6) and its now costing me £400!! i spoke to alot of insurance companies trying to get cheaper cover and i was told that insurance grouping doesn't matter so much now, its how many claims are made for that type of car, fiesta = common car = lots of claims, 1980's bmw E30 = not as common = not alot of claims. my 1st years insurance in 2003, a rover 200, 1.4i was £2161, had no choice but to pay it if i wanted to be on the road, but 1yrs NCB knocked £1000 off, so in the long run it'll save more money getting him his own policy to build up his own NCB. good luck either way.

Also from my experience, older cars are more expensive because the owners typically don't care about them as much as new car owners.
If insurance is that bad, you might just aswell look into financing/leasing a new car because the insurance deals that come with it are normally rather good.

Well, surely it's not about total numbers, but based on how many of let's say a thousand cars of that model are involved in accidents. And TBH I would think that an old 3 series is more of a drifters car than a typical nan's shopping trolley.
