He is going to get raped for the first couple of years no matter what he does. Best thing he can do is get something in the lowest possible insurance group and look at putting a parent on as a named driver.
Don't be tempted to insure it for him and add him as the named driver as this is insurance fraud (technical term is "Insurance Fronting" I beleive) which if caught out can land you in the brown smelly stuff.

Cars such as that will always be expensive to insure, as that's the sort of cars that are always driven by 17 year old yobbos.
My first car was a 1.6 rover. Very little street cred, but was cheaper to insure than a nova, and felt bloody quick when I was 17 too

if he's the main driver (driving more than anyone else) its gonna have to be his policy so he's gonna get bum raped i'm afraid.
if your misses has full no claims then add her on as a named driver, should bring it down a bit. i'm 22 and my mum saves me over £180 just be being a named driver, she hardly ever drives my car...only in emergencies.
also try something like a focus or modeo, family cars (even with bigger engines and higher insurance groups!!) are cheaper to insure because they are crashed less by young yobs.
also admiral is good 8)

The ones that are to blame are these little fuck-heads I keep seeing who drive whilst texting/facebooking because they can't possibly go for 30 seconds without telling their mates that they've just had a shit or how great the new N-Dubz single is. I saw a chavvy kid on a scooter a few weeks ago texting whilst trying to negotiate a country lane.
Obviously this situation is MUCH worse now than it was 10/15/20 years ago as technology has brought the internet into mobile form.

sorry i meant they are cheap...well cheaper than most for young drivers.
i have heard a lot of bad press about them on hear recently though

As said it's much cheaper if you go on as a main driver, some companys like Direct Line used to offer "Named driver NCD" this means your son can earn his NCD as well which he can then use to take his own policy BUT this is exclusive with Direct Line meaning he can only use on a policy with them.
Although do be careful with this as otherwise it is fraud if your not actually the main driver.
TBH I passed my test just after turning 17 and insurance was bad then but no where near like the quotes your getting I never quoted any of the said cars you mention but if I did it would have been circa £600.
TBH it is the typical bad apple scenario, there are a few idiots out there which spoil it for the rest and it's not just young drivers!

Moneysupermarket quoted me £3100 on my boy for a 1.3 2004 Ka that they valued at £1500,not that I've seen one of these collection models in mint condition for that!!!
Madly it was cheaper fully comp than tpft or tpo??
Made no difference putting the missus on and the worst thing is this was only a trial run as he's 15 so fuck knows how much it will be in 2 years time!!!
I know the press are making a big thing of this fronting but I remember when I passed my test I think I was the only person I knew insured in my own name not my parents!!!
It did pay dividends though as I was driving a fiat UNO turbo when I was 19 for about £450 a year, was 1995 though!!!
I used Eaglestar for years as they had a policy that you could insure your own car tpft and drive any other car tpo!!!whether it was insured or not, just couldn't be in your name.you could tax cars off it to,but they stopped it after about 3 years so I fucked them off then!

I paid £1850 fc for a 2 litre sierra estate when i was 17 in 2003.
the recent 30% insurance hike over the year hasn't been great either.
As people have suggested you want to try quoting strange and odd cars.
You should be expecting to pay around 2k to 2.5k.
Sod paying that though, another alternative is buying a classic car and getting insured on that,, but you gotta factor in repairs/parts limited mileage

just had an awsome idea...perfectly legal.
why don't you have a look at any driver policies. for my first 2 years on the road there was my mum, big bro and i all sharing my mums car. she got an any driver policy for £700 on a mk 1 1.8 focus. even covered my little bro when he was a learner too.
Downside is he wont build up any no claims but you will save a shit load of cash.
also as not being named drivers anyone who wants to use the car only needs verbal permision off the car owner/policy holder or written permission if the driver in question has points on their liscence.
i think it would be VERY hard to prove any fronting aswell but that is the only gray area.

anyway heres a few stas ive found-
anyway heres a few stas ive found-
• ONE in three young male drivers will write off a car in their first year of driving. Young women are half as likely to do so.
• ONE-QUARTER of the convictions for causing death by dangerous driving are for drivers under 20, even though this age group represents just 3pc of all drivers.
• ONE-QUARTER of drivers under 21 who have an accident lose control of their car.
• MORE than 130,000 under-25-year-olds were convicted of driving without insurance in 2001, more than half of total convictions.

Agreed - i'm with them for this year.... only! going back to direct line the customer service was worth the £50 difference in quotes

Just keep looking around. I know they'll have gone up a little bit more, and possibly a bit of inflation, but when I started driving in 2004 I had a 1.2 clio (value £600) and it cost me £1250 to insure - third party, fire and theft. Not much point insuring it fully comp anyway... at least there wasn't in my case, but definitely try to avoid just putting it on your insurance. It's expensive for his own insurance now, but I'm reaping the rewards with all my no claims at the age of 23. Can easily insure all sorts of cars, like scoobies, evos, etc. Even my ST170 is quite expensive for a lot of young people, but for me it's around £500 fully comp.
