technically they are illegal. even if you made them the correct size and typeface out of the correct retroreflective material and even with BS number and manufacturer postcode they will still be illegal because they are not of "plastic construction" ie they arent on a bit of plastic. of course they are if made properly just as visible as a legal plate but the morons in government have decreed an absolute standard for number plates.

you could try and argue that vinyl is a form of plastic but i doubt youll get far. A copper would have to be a right bell end to give you a ticket for a vinyl plate if its 100% correct except no plastic.

They don't have to be plastic warren. They have to be the correct size, font and spacing and be reflective.

I have fully legal metal plates for instance. With a certificate from the manufacturer and a copy of all relevant legislation that proves they are legal. Have been stopped by police twice with them and they weren't even mentioned.

To the op. If you mean stick on letters ie like decals to stick on the bonnet like on some old cars then no, they need to be mounted on a vertical plane

are they legal like on the e-types that had them?

is it for a certain type of car only, like black and silver plates etc etc

it will be the proper made ones, not just sticking a few letters on
i did look at criagsplates and they state they are illegal

surely its better than having the original on the dash with the excuse its just fallen off but it passes mot like that(probably shouldnt!)

yep i got told this by an officer when i got pulled over in south end cause i had a black and silver number plate he gave me a fine and he said that if i had my normal one and swicted it at the scene he said he dont have to give me a ticket!! i accepted the fine went to police station to pay it double checked there and they said same thing if i had my full size one i would have been fine.

i had a normal plate just extremly small few months back got pulled over and the officer asked if i had my normal plate if so put it on i put it on at the scene as i had it and he said thats fine he doesnt have to write me a ticket now

if you have your normal plate but cant swap it over at the scene youll have your self a Ł60 fine

I looked at this recently when I had my Evo 8.

I weighed up the risk etc and got a vinyl one made up. IMO it looked legal enough without being illegal. It was proper size etc etc and was fully visible. I reckon the cops would have to be fairly harsh on you to charge you for it.

As for the comment about E-types etc, even nobles I think? I'm pretty sure I read something about a cut off point up to where you could have a stick on plate. The rules are a twat.

Evo is gone so I no longer worry

Actually I think you are wrong or mis-interpreting it

My numberplate displays this bs and the name of the manufacturer who are approved by the dvla to supply these numberplates. I'll post up a photo and the full standard tonight if you like.
