Default question for all you motorcross heads

tonight im goin to look at a 06 ktm sxf 520 for a swap for my 08 crf 250, basically the bloke is a mate of my brothers, bought the bike to look big but is scared shitless of it, i kno financially its worth the swap but does anyone kno if there is anythin i need to look out for on these, my bro said it rides nice but ill have a go myself first, if anyone knows much bout these any info would be much appreciated

It will rip your arms out of the sockets and will be pointless for MX, good for super moto, or road thou

I was faster on track with a CRF250 than a higher powered CR250 two stroke (too much arm pump)

to be honest i dont go to too many tracks an the power aint a problem, i never had any probs with my crf 450 an that was a heavier bike than the ktm, an ill never go back to a 2 stroke

2 stroke are to vicious with the power, I liked the feel of the CRF250 TBH

My mate had the 2010 CRF250 fuel injected version at the same time as a RMZ450 fuel injected

He much prefered the CRF, alot more nimble and controlable, much faster on track than the majority of good 450 riders

He's sold it now for a KTM350 4 stroke which should be a nice compromise

I have a mate who races enduro with a gas gas 300 2 stroke and his dad has a ktm 520. His dad said on the tight and twisty bits he can't keep up with the stroker but beats it everywhere else. He does say it is a handful tho.

to be honest 250 4strokes lack outright power, my bro has a kxf 250 which is a great bike to ride its just too slow

If your just useing it for enduro / or simlar then it will be fine , but i wouldnt recommend one for someone whos into motocross unless your very expirenced , plenty of power there but just to bulky & heavy to be a serious contenter & the power will soon become tiring an you need to be firing on all cylinders to ride a bike like that other wise your going to hurt yourself....

I recently part exd my CR for the RS that's in bits in the garage. It's quite horrid being without a bike now. I bet that 520's an animal. How does it compare to the crf in terms of power? We're looking to replace our CRF's at work. I want to stay with the 450 (I'm lazy and like the extra power) but the other lads like the 250's cos they're lighter. But if the KTM is lighter......

my 450 was a bit too heavy for my likin i would say the ktm is more responsive an is much lighter, dont get me wrong its no where near as light as my 250 but the extra power for the weight u gain is worth it but yeah is def a bit of a monster,

Check when last rebuilt or how many hours use since , check all bills to see if its been looked after recently, when they go wrong they can cost a lot, check the norm, bearings , forks ,shock links ,ive seen new bikes nearly fucked after the beach race

cheers mate, its got stacks of bills with it, the bloke i got it off was only second owner, he used it twice, was scared of it an it sat in gis garage for 8 months, the bloke who had it before him only used it for a bit of enduro, its in great nick, boots only just started to wear through the paint on the frame by the pegs

ktms are pretty reliable tbh not really renowned for breaking but i guess it all depends how hard you ride and how much use it gets.

Sounds good, on most of the 4 strokes the valves need reshimming every few hours, we used to rebuild the shock and forks every 6 hours use and full strip down and rebuild every 10 hours [CLEAN AND GREASE ALL BEARINGS]. engine 4 stroke full strip and rebuild every 20 hours on the 2 strokes, new ring every 6 hours new piston every 12 hours , replate barrel and new rod and bearings every 50 hours if nothing went wrong,

250 2 strokes are brutal imho! 4 stroker is subtle compared to it! ktms are nice reliable bikes but are they not expensive on parts?

in the end i got a yz125 and now after a 450 to go with it, where i ride the 125 is much more fun that the yzf450 i also ride there but hopefully there are some beach runs soon

06 sxf 520?
the last 520 ktm did was the exc model mate(enduro) which changed to the 525 then later to the 540 the highest cc in the sx range was and still is the 450
my mate rode for ktm in world motocross and supermoto for them
try www.mxtrax.co.uk for info and stuff

im not that that up on ktm's as i have never owned one before, is def a 520, has 518 or somethin on the barrel an it looks a gen ktm barrel, it cant be the exc as it looks different, has no lights which i kno can be removed but more importantly has no stand or even a bracket where one has been, im not doubtin your word mate but now im confused
