yeah i drove mine after failing mot as it still had 2 weeks left on from the previous test..crazy rule though, as the car could be really dangerous but legal to drive..at least until the plod find out

its dangerous to drive then you may not be covered lol.
ie there was an example a few years ago of some cunt that had used cooking oil as brake fluid, and had a rolled up carpet as a bumper.
therefore the car was NOT in a roadworthy condidtion. but iirc still had avalid mot.
jay, what did it fail on btw?

come on guys a failed car is a failed car from the minute it fails, the database updates the car as without m.o.t so one pass of an a.n.p.r will get you a tug. the m.o.t only postdates when it passes if there is any test left to run and within thirty days of the current expiry date, SORRY !

but it still has a valid mot until the 28th. i had our car mot'd 2 weeks ago and that runs out on the 26th. had it done early so if it did fail i could fix it before the valid mot ran out.
and that came from the mot guy, that mot'd the car.
just needed a track rod end and that was it lol.

Thats funny, My mate who works for VOSA said yes you can drive it round till the 28th.
Failed or Not. When you car is MOTd it is so for a year, so a year is what you get. They can't take it off you.

An MOT pass is valid for a 12 month period
NO amount of MOT tests carried out after that initial pass will end its original 12 month period - regardless how many items it fails on

Mate seriously the story is this.......back in the days of written m.o.ts the old bill would get shown the "valid" and current mot and only have your word to prove it but now with the vosa central database and anpr they know 5mins after you do! there is no waver no nothing a fail is a fail until it passes its black and white guys! like the myth of having a week to re-tax the car no tax displayed is a criminal offence and with the data base they know whether its taxed tested insured and who its registered to in about 2 seconds! get your welding and bits and bobs done and get your retest done man!

or if you did that and it failed, you would effectivly only have an 11 month mot...
im sure in court, you will be let off with a techincallity, as your still holds a VALID mot.
if it fails, the mot man doesnt take that valid ticket and set fire to it infront of you, do they! well, you might

OK heres another scenario
I test a car today (yes I am an MOT tester) and pass it 100%
So that car now has 12 months MOT
I then carry out another test straight after on the same day
Now I fail it this time because I missed the rotten chassis
The car still has a valid 12 month MOT

no they dont burn your test certificate mate they issue a fail! there is no real point in testing your car before it expires anymore unless you know it will pass!

PassionFord Post Whore!!
Unless you get a notice from the test station saying the car is unsafe to drive you are fine.
When you get a fail, there is an element of "shit will fall off within 12 months". When that time is a maximum of 1 month, most issues are OK. It's just when the guy puts on the fail sheet "unsafe to drive because...." that you can't keep driving.

I dont no but i woudl of thought it will still be valid if it still has the current MOT which states the expiry date is 28th so in my eyes its still got a ticket on it until the 28th no matter what !?!

MOT Manager?
anyway the mot cert IS still valid but you could be done for driving an unroadworthy car
if it had only failed on say a wiper blade, bulb, tyre etc and you replaced them then the old cert would cover you 100%
I am a MOT Tester/quality controler if that helps
so the long and short of it is the mot is valid but the old bill will do you

20K+ Super Poster.
It's a YES without a shadow of a doubt, I did this for 1 YEAR, I bought a car D 50 PVX that should not have passed very clearly shouldn't have, 13 fail points.
Long story short contacted Jean Paul of the Mot inspectorate(the body that licenses examiners) who came and examined my car locally to me putting it through another mot, found 13 fail points, called the tester over who'd written the ticket for his mate to sell the car bollocked him, took his license from him, then gave me a copy of the fail, original fail was kept as evidence by him.
I of course said shit I can't drive my car then ?, he said fine mot certificates CANNOT be withdrawn, and even when issued when they shouldn't be it is 100% LEGAL to drive on them, I was ok as in his opinion the car was not dangerous, just mot faily.
I got stopped twice in the next year and there was no action, one bike cop who stopped me was my bessie mate as well!!

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
100% correct the car can have a valid MOT cert but can still be unroad worthy, you probably wont get done for driving without a current MOT but if they (the cops) are up to speed they will check out the car and nick you for something else. For example 4 brand new tyres on steel wheels for the MOT test then straight home and change them for bald tyres on the good looking alloys. 12 month MOT with 4 bald tyres.

It is my understanding your MOT is in fact valid until 28th (As plenty of others have said above) despite it failing as you booked it in earlier, it dosen't matter you still have until the expiry date on the certificate.
This here is an extract from another thread the other day copied from the DVLA (No poetry intended):
It is generally an offence to use on a public road, a vehicle of testable age that doesn’t have a current test certificate, except when:
> Taking it to a test station for an MOT test booked in advance
> Bringing it away from a test station after it has failed the MOT test, to a place of repair
> Taking it to a place, by previous arrangement, where problems that caused the vehicle to fail its MOT test, can be repaired
> Bringing it away from a place where the problems with the vehicle have been repaired
The reason I have done the above as it states even with no MOT you can still do the above, although clearly not the case with yours as you still have an MOT until 28th!
Hope this helps.
Martin

Im in the same situation as you Matt, Mot Tester and Quality Controller and was on a refresher course on thu and fri and asked this very question the OP has asked.
An MOT is valid until the date it runs out even if it is tested early and fails, you still have a valid mot. You may be subject to a Prohibition Order though if stopped and the vehicle is deemed to be dangerous.
At the end of the day the answer your looking for is YES your Mot is still valid until expiry date even though you have put it for test early and has failed.
