Default McGard Nut sheared off, b0ll0x

Hi all,

When refitting rear wheel the other day the centre of the McGard nut (the bit the key sits into) sheared off, I was only doing it up by hand as usual so no mega force used.

I tried the old trick of hammering on a slightly too small socket but that only resulted in breaking off the outer ring and now I'm left with just the collar and 1-2mm of the inside of the nut. There is not enough protruding to get with another socket or anything. I think my last resort is drilling the stud. Anyone done this before ?

Is it on the St?if so it could be drilling is your only option.if it's something like an older escort/fiesta/Ka then you can undo the centre nut of the drum and it pulls off the hub fine, then just drill/grind the stud from behind.

Drilling it shouldn't be too bad.you can then take the calipers off, disc and the stud should just tap out of the hub, their pressed in but should come out with a good whack or two!!

Is there enough room to get a locking nut removal socket on it? Y'know the threaded ones from Halfords. Used them a couple of times on McGards.

Yeah its the ST, might not be too bad as the top of whats left is just level with the stud so once I start drilling the nut will act as a guide for the bit.

Yeah I know the ones Dan but there is really nothing left to grab, just 1 or 2 mm proud of the collar and the collar itself is seated in the wheel.

this happened to me, but luckily it didnt all break off only half. so i got a socket that was to large and filled half it up with weld then cracked it off this way.

you cut try cutting a small groove in the face off it with an angle grinder and then try un doing it with a touch crew driver and a spanner. (what i did) then if it breaks (what happened) the socket/weld method worked very well :L this one was done up very tight i will add. the rest just came off by hammering a socket over them
