Car : Mk2 orion 1.6 efi (standard)

Driving it earlier it kept cutting out randomly. Thought i had no fuel. Managed to limp it to a petrol station.

£10 of fuel later and it now wouldn't start. Had to abandon it.

When flicking the ignition on, there was no 'prime' noise.

Checked fuse,
Checked inertia switch,
Relay (under dash) clicks when i turn the ignition on, and clicks off after two seconds (like it should...)

Am now under the impression its the pump (or the wiring going to the pump)

How do i get at the pump (i'm guessing its in the tank or on the tank).

Step by step guide required for getting at the leads to the pump (to check for voltage)
And removing / replacing the pump if theres power there....

Might sound like a dumb-ass thing, but i've never had to mess with one before...
Anything to be weary of when getting at it?
Need to also get some cheap-ass tools to do the job with as all mine are at work and i aint got no transport to fetch em. So any info on specific tools to get would also be greatly appreciated.
Now got to have a day off work to get this sorted.

you need to drop tank mate 10 minutes of a job so long as none of the captive nuts spin!

 

oh its held on with 13mm bolts so you will need tool wise 13mm socket, ratchet, extension and a screwdriver for jubilee clip on pipe on the back of the tank

im pretty certain the fuel pumps are external on them but its been a while tbh.

im in cannock tmrw aswell but wether id have time i dont know ?

 

im sure the pump is inside the tank on them and not external not 100percent though its happened to me mate same thing i tapped the tank and the back seats and it started working 4 a bit then cut out on mine it was the wiring basically the 2 wires had a slight cut and touched eachother and wiring was all done a crappy job had torip everything to replace. take ur back seat out and follow the wiring up

To drop tank - how high has the car gotta be? - ive got 1 axle stand and a trolley jack.

Might pull a wheel off to get some extra height... lol

Will spanners or mole grips do the job, as i dont think they sell socket sets at the shop im walking to... lol

Got cheapo screwdrivers at home that will get the clip off.

 

100% in the tank on an efi car, it was mfi that was external. You will need some decent quailty sockets mate as 99% of the time they will be rusted to buggery lol! A battery impact gun would help a great deal too! Soak the nuts in WD40 first too if possible

 

got to be fairly high mate you could jack it in the middle of axle then put axle stand under one side and wheels under the other with the jack as well not ideal but should be ok if you drop one of the tank down completley and rest the other side on the exhaust you might be able to squeeze the pump out
spanners wont do as two of the bolts are quite high up
you cant get to the wiring under the seat as mentioned above iirc you couldnt on mine anyway

 

WD40 was already on my list to fetch. Impact gun isnt do-able though.

Cant picture how the tank is held on. I'm imagining two bits of allthread hanging from the car and a metal strap.

If all else fails, will a hacksaw do the job of removing it? just need to bodge the fecker running so i can get it to work and do a proper job of it.

Gonna fetch :

Cheapo spanners - £3
Crap mole grips - £2 (x2)
WD40 - £2
Hacksaw - £1
Cheap multimeter - £2
Bag of big cable ties... lol - £1

 

Cheapo socket set (if they have one) - £10

 

if its like the mk5 and 6 escorts then there are no straps just 4 bolts two at front two at back you wont get it off with hacksaw mate unless you cut a big hole out from under the back seat lol!

 

Im thinking i need to just 'borrow' a car now to fetch my proper tools... lol

bit of a mission on the buses. taxi would cost me loads more than a set of cheapo tools...

Ill jack it up in the light tomorrow and have a butchers at the fixings etc...

i know how you feel mate my cossie broke down the other day i had to get bus to work, with the walking and the bus ride it took me an hour to do a journey that takes me less than ten minutes in my car!

I know its gonna turn out to be a real pig. Rusty, daily driver bolts that wont come out, wiring thats 19 yrs old, cracked and rotten, a fuel pump that resembles something from noah's ark. And me stuck under the f'ckin thing wondering about how i'll get the old girl going again.

Why oh why do i still drive these old shit-heaps? lol

I can usually fix anything with a screwdriver, cable ties and sticky-tape. lol

Where to get new pump from....???? Could do with one tomorrow. Will be popping up just affords to see if they've got anything in. Anywhere else to try?
