Default painting newly plastered walls

right just got my first house and have had the walls skimmed as house is quite old and plaster was shit, whats the best way to paint them
i.e do you use watered down paint first as the walls absorb the new paint or just start painting but add a few coats and whats best matt or silk?walls are only going to be white for the time been.
thanks

You have to seal / prime all newly plastered walls with WATERED down matt emulsion. 20 - 30% watered down.

painted out hallway with that and it's been good as gold.

(only comes in white though)

Paint with watered down paint first or your normal paint will flake off. depend on the paint depends on the mix cheap paint is thin anyway so needs less water.

Dave + Domesticated, just doesn't compute. LOL.

You MUST water it down for the first coat at least, as said above.

make sure plaster is properly dry
get some white contract emulsion from your local builders merchants
thin this out with about 30% water for the first coat
then give it 2 coats of vinyl matt , thinning the first one with about 15% water
with the last coat neat

WHATEVER YOU DO.. do not rush to get the pure paint on it, When I had my place done I water down the paint and did a few coats before putting the paint on.

Now, the misses on the other hand was left at 9am with instruction to paint some watered down paint on.

I come back at 11am and the whole front room and bedroom is solid white, we spent the next week sanding down ever flaking paint and making a total mess of the walls. The only way I managed to stop it was to coat it with pva 1 part to 5 parts water to seal it.

it was a NIGHTMARE.

The misses claimed they did water it down lol and funny enough, all the other rooms I did and did water it down never peeled.

Tell me about it! but we've had enough walls / ceilings plastered in our cottage so this is my expert field!

The watered down first coat on to the plaster is just a sealer.. the new plaster will literally suck the paint/water in! it will be dry within minutes! dont worry if its patchy. Leave it a few hours then go back over with a slightly less watered mix.

I also would NOT use vinyl silk or the like. Just use normal matt emulsion for walls. We've used farrow and ball paint throughout our house and have found it superb. Johnstones trade is good too, they also colour match F&B

Love

Watered down Pva onto the Walls first to seal them, then however many coats over the top. For example, the ceiling only needed 2 coats but one of the Walls was still not properly covered after 7 coats, same paint, same pva so go figure

After a little bit of research it turns out that the Walls were pva'd before they were plastered so I'll accept that as a thank you

Just got to figure out now what we stuck on the Walls before we painted as it sure as shit wasn't watered down paint

never put pva on newly plastered walls vinyl silk soft sheen or eggshell
just thinned matt paint
if you go to your nearest dulx decorating centre you will get a 10L tub of glidden contract matt for 14-00
you can finish the walls off with dulux diamond matt which is very hard wearing but quite expensive

I've had the whole of my house plastered in the last 18 months.

Go to B&Q
Buy 10l Crown Matt Emulsion in white (Ł13 tops)
Mix with a small amount of water as its watery enough
Paint on the 'well dried' new plaster
Leave to dry
Apply 2 coats Crown emulsion not watered down
Job done.

If you find hair line cracking or want to cover some then after you've white washed use Base Coat - its expensive but does what it says on the tin, again B&Q own brand is fine ( Ł26 for 5l ) but you'll need to do whole walls as it will stand out when its done.

None of the newly skimmed walls I've painted have had any problems doing this and I was really impressed with the base coat.

B&Q own brand may be ok for mist... But for a decent colour and finish... Wouldn't touch them with you mums!

Final finish get the best

crown paint is crap hardly anybody specifies it on sites or developments
i have been doing this for 26 years and would recommend dulux diamond matt finish
in trade form it is about 50-00 for a 5L can
farrow and ball paint that dave has recommended is a very good product as well
the glidden paint i recommended is made by dulux for trade use and will knock spots off of any other brand for coverage

can't see pic, but should be patchy and yes will dry immediately. Leave for a few hours and do another slightly less watered coat, then leave till tomorrow and paint in your final colour (2 coats)

Ive done loads of property that I own(ed) had nearly every wall done and never bothered to use watered down emulsions ever.
the last property I did, three floors, had every wall and ceiling plastered, and sraight emulsion on, rented it out for a good while and never had any issues.

Had a commercial shop done 6 years ago, same again, straight paint, and guess what - its stil on the walls !!

Yes you will use more paint ultimately as new plaster absorbs moisture, just two coats, decent thickness and job jobbed !
