Default Bloodyhell, Drifting in the UK has got serious- LICENSES

I know almost bugger all people off here drift (tho everyone with RWDs "think" they can drift, most wise thing ive ever heard is "You think you are sideways in the car, but from the outside, the angles are negligable" reminds me of a 3dr cossie track vid from a while back...) but its getting a bit serious now and you gotta PROVE you can do it before you can compete now...

Since drifting in the UK started (looking at this years calender theres either a practice or competition event almost every week now at various venues!) ive seen plenty of goons enter the events (some even in the "Pro" category even tho that costs more- shows how overconfident they were!) and score a flat ZERO and not even get the car remotley sideways once, or just go clean off backwards at the first bend. Looks shit and a waste of everyones time.

Now the various UK+Irish drift clubs have got together to do a licencing thing, free to get it, just have to pay the normal amount youd pay at the practice events, and go for the licence (and TRY n pass it )

General tests will be somthing along the lines of what they did at a recent practice/license day (judged from the OUTSIDE as cars feel sideways when they sooo not really, its a specator sport when it comes down to it, most entertaining car/driver wins)--

Figure of 8 test (4-5 consecutive figure of 8 drifts)
An S bend (3 out of 6 runs to be good)
An oval (3-4 laps anti-clockwise drifts)

Get a proper licence with photo etc, and then can enter the events properly (cash and prizes if you any good, different classes too so if you relativley wank you still got a chance )

Being like this makes it harder, but in a way makes me wanna do it more, more proffesional, an actual sport now, and how cool is it to have a "drifting licence" (sounds a lot harder to get than a NationalB race one too, seems any monkey could get that!)

LOL @ piggys trying to take yours away for it.

Drifting license sounds like a good idea, but might be in the interests of the sport to hold "ameteur night" events, cause otherwise at the end of the day where do they expect people to practice to get their license in the first place, you arent allowed to drift on most track days, and you arent allowed to on the road, so its going to look like they are forcing people into getting the skills in the first place illegally.
Although i guess you can learn round a field at a grasstrack event technically, but it isnt quite the same.

I've never been a fan of drifiting.

I know it takes a hell of a lot of skill to balance a car that way - must be great fun to do but I think its incredably boring to watch. Bit like drag racing.

Just my own opinion

I enjoy seeing the occasional bit of impromtu arse out action on a roundabout etc by hooligans on the queens highway, but got to agree tht watching car after car all specifically setup for the tasking meandering past sideways round quarry at castle coombe or whatever gets extremely tedious very quickly, the only enjoyable bit is when some numpty gets it wrong and writes off their pride and joy

i would love to have somewhere to practise drifting, then i might get better at it.

as for watching, then i love watching the jap vids when there drifting around the streets, and its enjoyable to spectate the nutters on coombe at the action days.

Simon- You EVER been to a drift event to watch? Dont sound like it!
Damn sight more entertaining than any track day, its not like 1 corner over, its a combined set of say 6-8 corners and everyones totally different.
Watching a drift round one corner isnt anything much, and they wouldnt even score any real points for that, what they score for is all the corners one after each other in one continuous drift with no traction at all, even on the small straight bits.
You dont seem to like watching anything But upto you.
You go to a proper event and sit in the stands and everyone goes fookin mental, so i guess you must me one of the few that finds it boring as most the people were getting well over exited
Watching some goons drift round one corner (badly usually) on a trackday like Castle Coombe etc dont show you shit, what they do is a damn sight better than that.
And besides, im on about doing it, not watching, and you obv not done that either!

Chip- They all Amatuers, no need for amatuer nights, esp as they have different classes in the competition, theres practive days almost every week where you can get yer licence and practice, you dont need to do it on the road or a "normal" track day.
They not really set up for drift either, most cars are just setup like normal track cars, even the people who been doing it for a few years all admit they got no special geometry setup etc for drift, theres some big threads on it on the driftworks site.
"Meandering" isnt quite right either mate, they wont score points for going slow, you need to go see them, 85mph+ 4th gear boradside drifts at times

Mark- Like said, there practice days almost every bloody week in the UK this year it seems if you want a go, so plenty of places to practice, like i said "You think you are sideways in the car, but from the outside, the angles are negligable" applys to most people who think they get the arse out, so its WELL worth going to practice i reckon, even just to do dick about for a laugh showing off

You never need a licence to to practice events anyhow so can drift to your hearts content, only reason they brought in licences was cause so many cock smokers think they can drift and go enter when they blatantly cant and score a 0 and bore everyone silly.

Stig AUTOMATICLY gets his Licence mate

ANYONE who scored decent points in the Pro category last year or won an amateur (He did BOTH in 1 round, won the amatuer so they let him have a go in the Pros and nearly won that! He was fooookin amazing hanging out the door waving when totally broadside ) gets a licence automaticly as theyve proved they well upto the job!

Blue starlet at the pod wasnt a HT Racing one, your thinking of the umm, them geezers from london way, proper mad old school blokes, forget their name now

But stigs black one is fast as fuck too, as well as drifting its ran a 12.1@111mph

RWD starlets are piece of piss to put big power pintos in really, just mainly use Mk2 Escort bits and the odd Capri bit, and make mental cars.

Shame its a coont to find any RWD starlets for sale...

Aint that the truth!

The amount of times I've heard "I was properly sideways" and the car didn't even have 5 degrees angle on it.

As soon as my car is ready, I will be 100% entering the D1, but with plenty of practice - may need to find a bit more lock from somewhere though

itsmeagain - I'll admit that I have never been to a drifting event. But then I don't really want to. I prefer to watch rallying or rally cross. Just my preferance! Like I said fair play to the guys who do it as you gotta have some serious car control to be able to do it. I just find the whole concept of it boring.

Im very similar. TO me its a participation event, not something you watch. That vid that was posted a while ago of the Driftworks car on that little tight track. Watched 30 secs then turned it off.

Good amount of skill, but not my cup of char.

RichW- The events this year are mainly at Snetterton and Silverstone GP Circuit like last year, not exactly like that vid is it
Seriously, a proper event is NOTHING like that vid.

Daz- Yea, tho the GTRs a bit heavy for it, id prefer a cheapo drift shed, but its money, i could make a decent one for under a grand, but still, its not pennies is it when you got other cars
