Default Where is your speedo cable?

Hello,

Sierra sapphire cosworth 4x4 just so you know... its a ford

As title, Mine is coming from the speedo though the "firewall" next to the fuse box and out though to the engine bay and right across the cam cover then down the right hand side into what i guess is what makes it work.

AHH A PICTURE!! forgot i had this.

I guess i can pin it to the back but i cant see anyones else's like it, guess i got a pants one...

Just wondering where all yours are as i have looked at LOADS of engine bays just now and cant see one speedo cable.

Also i never see the cables/pipe work at the front of the bay on anyone else's and mine has two or three different ones just smashed across.
Ones the throttle umm one is from turbo to water and the other is from the air filter. You probably all ready know.

When i see at other photos theres just look so nice and clear!

Ah better photo!

Any nice clear photos like my bottom one would be helpful thanks!
Any ideas where i can hide most of this?

Many Thanks Eigdoog

Put a hole in the right hand side of the firewall and run it along the inside of it.

Fit a stack & you can throw the cable away that tends to hide it .

I didnt think you could bend the wire that much to make a hole on the right hand side.

Fit a stack? i have no idea what one is how does that get rid of it?

cant help being thick

Stack make loads of seperate dials aswell, do a google for 'stack gauges' or something along those lines. I believe they're electrical, so you can do away with the cable, and run an electrical speed sender. I'm sure Rod or someone will correct me if I'm wrong though

You'll still need a wire, but only a small electrical one, instead of the chunky speedo cable

The cable has been routed wrong, it goes through the bulkhead drivers side and then down to the box, this is on 2WD (Speedo assay drivers side) it looks as on yours it connects to the left hand side of box opposed to right hand side but that defo is not right some numptys just run it across the engine, I suspect its supposed to run along the bulkhead.

My throttle cable is same as yours and runs across the intercooler but it's cable tied under slap panel where as yours is just loose, perhaps the bays you have seen don't still have aftermarket breathers as this will loose you a pipe running across the front.

2WD turbo return runs across cam cover and through the engine eye and so doesn't actually touch, it looks as if your one is right as 4x4 was different, just need tidying up (Cable ties are your friend)

Stack dash isn't that easy to do as you will need to fit a VSS!

Your engine is also YBJ which is quite rare!

Martin

your cabel needs to come out the hole in front of the fuse box

it then goes round the abs pump in a loop to the plastic bulkeah panel, if you look where the wiring goes on the bulkhead panel you will see 2 clips on each end to hold the speedo cable in, it then routes down the back of the inlet into the sump where it connects to the speedo drive

you can see here in my pic of the loop of the cable going to teh back panel

and the cabe will bend, as the cable on the inside is like a tight long spring so will flex where ever and still spin to operate the speedo

martysmartie:

Cable ties it is! I wont put new dials in as it is alot more work i guess.

How do you take it off as other wires are in the way to pin it back!

How can you tell from a photo that it is a YBJ? Also what does it stand for? I was wondering as i have seen many the same and wondered how you could class it as "rare"

xr4x4rs:

I got told i cant bend it too much or when i go down the road the speedo dial will keep moving about alot and wont show the right speed, But i see yours is bent round alot and if you get on fine with it i may aswel just do that.

Thanks guys!

it just unscrews out the sump part

you dont need to tie it back, if you look at the bulkead panel you will see to plastic c clips that the cable clps into

There are less YBJ then YBG the former was on the earlier cars. YB is obviously the name of the engine and the last letter dicpicts the derivative I.E YBB the original and YBD RS500, this was all the engines in the Sierra range, there is also a very rare version called a YBL but thats another story.

YBJ has red cam cover where as YBG has green (The colour denoting the fuel type respectivly, YBG also has three cats and CL) there is alot of difference between the two your one sports alot of RS500 revisions and I think will have a 205 block opposed to a 200.

As to what 'YB' depicts is a very grey area I have never meet someone who knows, the same as what RB is to Nissans (Some believe that to be race bred)

As said best to clip it back if possible, I was referring to cables by intercooler for the ties, it was as I suspected when I replied the cable runs across the bulkhead.

The 205 block is exactly the same as a Pinto block it was selected from the production line for it's bore tolerances (There will be four numbers stamped by the dizzy, Cosworth asked for only grade 2 or 3 to be delivered to them) Once you rebore these number becomes totally irrelevant anyway I.E 2222. The only other difference is the Cosworth blocks have YB then a number stamped on the front of the block.

The 200 block is reinforced and heavier than the 205 block, however it's only of benefit if you want big power, the 205 block in yours is more like a RS500 block (from memory) and so can handle the power.

NB if you really want some pub quiz knowledge 20 denotes the capacity and the 5 means 1985 the year the block was revised before such time the blocks were merely named 20.

The 20(0) means 1990 when again the block was revised with the result being the 4x4/Escos block we know.
