How do I tell which COM port is which?
ie, If I want COM 4 how do I find out which port it is?

If you goto Contol Panel/System/Device Manager and open the ports tab it will give you more details there.

Most PC's will only have 2 COM ports physically connected. Something on COM4 might be a virtual COM port or a device installed that has its own COM port.

What does it say is connected to it?

Its for this. I get the impression that I need to plug my VAGCOM lead into a certain port so it knows where to look for it?
Or am I over complicating it? Plug the lead into any USB and into the car and it'll detect it automatically?

So you would need something like this

Virtual COM port drivers. I would plug it in first, see how it configures the device, then select each com port in turn and see if it picks up the device. If not, use the link above above and see if that helps.
