i think half the battle is finding something you enjoy. im an electronics engineer and f*cking hate every minute, working with shit machines and PC's and work collegues that have no clue what to do.

we can all give advise but really it needs to be something you are going to enjoy instead of having a trade and after a couple of years or 10 hating every minute like myself.

Agreed, I used to love computer programming as a hobby but after 15 years im bored of it as a job.

Thats why despite my awesome technique and amazing dimensions Ive never gone into porn as a job, as I dont want to ruin another hobby

beefy you can do most the survival courses and basic courses yourself as a private student. there are a few maritime colleges in the UK that do it.

yes it wont be cheap but if it gets your foot in the door or makes your CV stand out above others with no experience then it might be worth it.

failing that you could join the Royal Naval Reserve to get some limited experience.

I think college evening courses whilst doing what you are doing is going to be the only way forward. You need to bear in mind that things are not going to change quickly and you will have to stick with whatever course you are doing for a couple of years unless you can pick a field and get a company to sponsor you through your training whilst earning very little doing the job that you want?

I had a pretty crap time towards the mid / end of last year through no fault of my own. Had plenty of time off and loved it and made me re focus on my career.

Previous to the events I had been thinking of a change of occupation, but could find nothing that interested me that would pay me enough to keep my lifestyle the way I want.

Difficult situation with the way the economy is now, but I'm sure you will find something if you give it you're all.

i have recently had to take a 10k pay cut to get myself into a job that has prospects and a job that i can see myself enjoying. i am only 23 so think i have done it at the rite time.

i have done quite a few different types of work and have city and guilds and gnvq's in most of them i was a commercial tyre fitter and have roadside qualifications etc etc done that for 4 years but had enough of rolling around on the m25 in the wind and rain at 3/4 in the morning.

I am now a trainee printer engineer and the job has got lots of scope to move up the ladder and to move into different areas of IT networking etc i have been doing it now for six months and enjoy the line of work . the only down side was taking the 10k pay cut as paying to mortgage has become quite a struggle some months but given time and more experience the pay will become very good.

if your thinking uni then do it ASAP before the fees triple.

as a mature student you should be able to get on most courses at a non-redbrick uni regardless of qualifications as long as you can show some relevent expereince.

Worst case you do a piss easy foundation year and then 3 year degree.

but if thats what you want do it ASAP as the fees rates for "current students" wont be effected but the next years will.

UCAS has to be in by jan so you need to move quick.

After reading this thread dont you think it is so important to encourage young people to get their head down at school the first time round. It is so easy to fall into the trap of fucking around as im sure we all did, but when its required the seriousness of it all should be above anything.

I think you will agree that the majority of people that are into mechanics and engineering are not bothered about learning shit like R.E and shitty English Litt. I really do think that the education board should be looking at this with in schools.

When I finished school (I hated school by the way, it was shit) I came out with good grades and then went to work at Tesco because I wasnt interested in going to do A levels straight away or Uni. I didn't know nothing apprenticeships. It wasn't until I enquired myself at 21 about apprenticeships and went back to college. Now im doing a Aerospace Engineering degree with work and im very happy.

I really dont think that you are to old to do anything you want, there is always a way of something working out for you. Just dont give up trying mate
