anyone know about Aux Air Valves on escort rs turbo's ?
Hi,
I have been having strange idling problems on my escort recently, the car will start up ok but when its cold it will really struggle to idle and will almost cut out, once its warmed up its ok. It will also 'hunt' sometimes and idle eratically ie. pull up at traffic lights, car will idle at 800rpm, pull up at home 1/2 hour later and car will idle at 1100rpm.
Now I think it may be a faulty aux air valve as I know this helps the car idle when cold. So, this morning before I went to work I pulled off the electrical connector and started the car, no difference at all, still idled shit ! Drove off down the road and pulled into a petrol station about 10 minutes later (car was starting to warm up). When I stopped the car was 'hunting' very violently !!!!! the revs were jumping from 800rpm right up to just below 2000rpm I switched off and plugged the electrical connector back on, started up and it idled ok, maybee a bit high (1500rpm) but there was no hunting.
Does this sound like a faulty aux air valve ? If not, what else would cause the car to hunt as I described above when the black electrical connector is disconnected ?
any help much appreciated,
Duncan

20K+ Super Poster.
if they work the same as they do on normal k-jet (i dont know if they do or not) then the connector dont really do much, its just there to heat the element up so it dont run for too long. check the valve's closing fully when the car's 100% warm (pull the pipe off and see if air is getting past it)
is your base idle and mixture set correctly?

Hi mate,
I had very similar symptoms to yourself, i.e. sometimes it wouldnt idle at all and sometime it would overrev on idle and hunt (its the > 1500RPM and throttle shut fuel cut working that causes that). It turned out to be my Aux Air Valve as you suspect.
The valve has a heater and it fully open when cold. When you start up the heater in the valve causes it to slowly start closing like a thermostat, the idea being as the engine warms up you need less extra air to make it idle. Mine seemed to be closing properly visually but when it closed there was still a small leak (i blew though it to test). Luckily I had a spare one and so I just swapped one and all was well.
Get down the scrappy and get one of an XR3i - they are the same.
Cheers,
Stu
