Default w engines

watching the telly about the veyron, they showed how the engien was built and put together and it seems that my views of the w engine being 2 sets of v's stuck together sharing the same crank

it's actually a nomral v engine with the pistons on each bank offset, so you've got 2 banks of pistons in each v

possibly everyone else but me knew this, but in case they didn't

I didnt know, daft as it sounds I thought it was two V engines side by side and could never get my head around how two cranks would marry up Took the W symbol as meaning two V's side by side.

I'm not aware of an official explanation as to requirement for the number of banks, but the veryon has 4 banks rather than 3, in the same way that a vr6 still has 2 banks of offset cylinders, as its just 2 of them joined together essentially.

so in this case it's a case of 2 + 2 really should = 2 but does in fact = 4 ?
