Mar k, why is my post silly, it's my opinion. I think lorry driving is boring as fuck as do 99% of all wagon drivers. I have my class one and have held and worked it for 10 years and have seen the arse fall out of the industry.

Watching a program about an company who not so long ago were up shit creek and in the motoring press for lots of the wrong reasons, get everyone all excited cause they name lorries girls names is just plain boring and shit tele.

Me, right now for a job, I design and fit custom ceilings for all sorts of companies from the nhs, MAN diesel, conlons to private churches and businesses. I'm currently booked up till the end of next year with 2 trips to belgium, a trip to the middle east and china later in the new year......exciting enough?

i wouldnt clasify that as an exciting job at all, pretty dull im my opinion.
but then thats probably why theres not a tv programme about it.

im with you on the fact that the arse has fallen out of driving, however its still something i and many others enjoy.

its obvious to me that a fair few people on here and across the country do find that programme intresting,
same as ice road truckers was pretty good.

opinions will allways vary as life would be very dull if we all enjiyed the same things

I thought that too - It's little things like that which will keep that chaps morale up when he's hundreds of miles away from his wife and kids!

Beats the hell out of Northern who are too tight to pay a few quid for some vinyl printing and a bit of pomp and ceremony to name a train after one of our colleagues who died doing his job last month after he fell from a moving train into the path of another

No one said my job was exciting, you asked what I did that was so much better than sitting in a lorry for 15 hrs a day with wanker drivers on the roads, arse hole office staff and more and more h&s rules being put in force and I consider travelling abroad and working in some of the worlds best cities on some awesome buildings a tad bit better than the aforementioned lorry driving, but as you say horses for courses and all that but considering I have been a wagon driver and Now a celing designer/construction engineer which I'm guessing you havnt then you can't really comment.....

Yup the programme will be popular as there are some fucking sad stobart spotters out there who will tune in and as for comparing ice road truckers to Eddie stobarts programme that's not even the same ball park... That's like comparing Robson greens fishing programme to that worlds deadliest catch programme!!!!!

I think in years to come there will only be couple of hauliers on the road , 1 will be Eddie Stobart and the 2nd will be Turners of Soham .

Mrs1 well Eddie was fined lots and lots of money not so long ago before he sold the company to his brother. Guys running Benton tacho and so on, was pretty much the problem but on a large enough scale and frequent enough to be in all the motoring press( hgv press) weekly.

His brother and whomever else runs the business with his must be doing something right as they have recently bought out James irlam and re-branded all his wagons with stobart livery. Great success but still don't want to watch a programme about some stinking old lorry drivers on boring old motorways delivering pot noodles to ndc's.......rather x factor and that is an awful show ha ha

right then lets begin

i used to work for james irlam when stobarts bought us out things went downhill.

i work 12+ everyday 6 till 8or9 at night long days at the moment we are doing longer hours than trampers who are out all week.
The guy in the tv programme is seen cooking his dinner on his diesel tank with a gas stove which if i remember are banned from all our trucks because a driver woke up in the morning after using his stove the night before and lit a fag and boom the gas had been leaking all night the result 70% burns to his body so thats why they are banned from use .

Also you may have seen that the driver had fancy curtains in his cab along with boxing gloves hanging in front of the windscreen and a third hand steering device fitted all of these items are banned from inside our trucks.

Also the guy is seen useing his isotrak this is also banned from use while driveing so it seems to me that its 1 rule for 1 and another rule for everybody else gets right on my tits.

They have shown u all what they want everyone to see but really its nothing like on the tv its 10 times worse rant over till i have another bad day

Oh and something else the owner is that picky he forgot to notice the tanker last week was not in carlisle but in his own depot in stoke!!!!

I been watching it, got a mate who works on the wagons so watched out of interest really. Agree that the spotters are a bit ott, but i guess it keeps them entertained.
Never actually realised how massive the company is, and the sort of money involved.
Thought it was nice and all when they took the wagon off the lad which were named after his daughter, then named his new one after his other daughter

Heres another view:-

I work for Stobarts as well, and this is without a doubt one of the easiest driving jobs i've ever had! Nice new clean motor, fairly decent uniform, job security! I dunno how easy some drivers want it!

The thing with drivers is, wherever you go, whoever you work for, theres always someone moaning about something or other. The amount of chinese whispers which goes on in this industry is ridiculous! It wouldn't surprise me if I walked into a waiting room at some point and got told Eddie is related to Nelson Mandela!

Edward Stobart (Eddies Son) was the man who originally run the show untill things turned a bit Pete Tong and he got bought out by his brother William and Andrew Tinkler who have since turned things around!

Anyway, I dare say some drivers will be moaning about what ive got to say but to be honest ill probably hear some bollocks later about something so im not too bothered!

And JoeE30, to some people lorry driving is boring and I respect your opinion as you've been there and done it! However ive sat in offices, sold cars, done all types of sales, and this is without a doubt the one thing ive enjoyed the most! Being on the open road, tunes on the go, no one hassling me, it does me just fine!

Dave si, I totally agree it's whatever suits you, but seeing as I have done my 10 years and now find it the most mind numbing work in the work I'm entitled to that opinion as are you and some of the others who still enjoy and find it a good job....

As for all the people who think they could earn 40k a year not a fucking chance, my old man was a wagon driver, ADR actually and back and the early 90's was bringing home £350 a week and that was considered good money, not many drivers now will earn close to that and we have moved on 20 years...... Get out lads and learn a new trade as the cpc will only make things harder

wincantons are offering £30k a year for class 2 at hoddeson, i recently had my induction with them, decided to stay with my current employer driving class1 in the end as they offered me a nice pay rise and its only 4miles from me as opposed to wincantons 20mile drive.

also ADR still pays well depending who your with.
£40k a year is achiveable. some of the BP and morrisons drivers are getting close to £50k working on their days off, however there are some companies/agencies offering far less than that.
Due to do my cpc early next year.
love driving the wagons but hate the hours which is the only reason ive been looking at retraining

About ten years ago there were some of us hauling out of felixstowe for CCC, some truckers on here will know the company and we were earning big money, you want to know how, ok beleve this or not, we would leave Felixstowe for Scotch Frost in Edinbrough tip then reload paper in Cramlington and back to Felixstowe, for breaks we would pull out the engine stop control a little then clamp a crocodile clip on it to short out the tacho showing a break, there were many trips done like this, maybe many young driver on here wont beleve it but I am sure there will be a few older drivers on here that were doing the same 10 years ago and will remember the log books

Whoever brought my old Scania 143 i am sorry but it has done a lot more miles than it shows on the clock.

It used to be as simple as pulling a fuse! Or winding the clock on, putting another tacho in, and hey presto, a full days driving again!
