you need them top and bottom if you use something like that.
problem is you just move the weakpoint from the door to the frame. most frames for garage doors just arent fitted robustly from a security perspective not forgetting often 20 years of wear will have taken its toll on the wood.
remember you will never STOP a thief if they are determined. (well not legally )
BUT you buy yourself time by adding security features.
and you have to make sure the bits you add dont make things worse. Those locks on that black doored garage dont look the best. Youve got no reinforcing plates behind the door so in effect its all reliant on those 2 bolts and very thin garage door steel!!! Also he needs to ensure his garage door frame is properly tied into the brickwork. Think about it, the wood frame would have had some flexibility which to an extent would stop things breaking. now you have taken out the flexibilty putting extra strain on the probably few bolts into the brick! Much better to ensure its properly tied into the brick.

sunk properly into the concrete they are good!
remember you need to back things up with an alarm, preferably one that tells you when your away from home so a gsm module or linked to a security company.
If youve got good security all round then they wont get your car away in under 5 minutes and longer they take, more chance of them getting caught.

it all depends on what the construction of the garage is
no point in putting all the security on the door if you can just bash it off it's hinges with a sledgehammer
we've got double thick pillars around the garage door, that and you can't open it from the outside sort of helps
plus there is another car in front so that you can't open the door without moving the car first
plus there are steel gates to stop prying eyes
and there are stops in the driveway to stop if all that fails
plus it's alarmed separately
9 inch concrete blocks is where it's at though

I use this. i no a grinder will get throw it but by then the neighbours will suspect somet if my van is not there as i will be at work. Easy to do and inside the garage door so oppertuneist wont suspect much just beeing a garage door.

mine is in a row of other rented garages that all have just the standard lock and the bottom padlocked, if I was to put anything more on mine on the outisde anyway, think it would invite a lot more attention, poeple wondering what you got to keep secure, sometimes just not drawing attention to the garage can do wonders

Texts your phone when activated, says battery last 3 years but mines only lasted 1 year!
