Different brands of brake pads - whats is best?
i usualy have ferodo but with my "enthusiastic" driving there down to the last 3mm of pad after 3 months of use. they have a nice stopping feel because they bite harder as they warm up so no need to press down on the pedal more. and work well from cold
i might fit some mintex pads but never used them before. but my old man recons there the dogs bollox because he had them in his old lotus powerd anglia back in the 70's lol
had greenstuff pads once on a 2.0 fiesta with cosie front brakes and they was fookin headge seeker pads when cold. then when warm they seemed to lock up easy like on/off brakes and even worse in the wet!
anyone know what manufactuer halfords own brand of pads is? are they any good?

Mintex and EBC are rubbish.
Ferrodo or Carbon Lorraine are the only choice. I currently run Ferrodo DS2500 in my Focus RS, DS2500 in my Fiesta ST and Ds2500 and DS3000 in the XR2 track car.

i've heared way too many stories of on/off braking and warped discs wih ebc in the same sentence so i have never and will never give them ago!
dont know about mintex, dont seem to hear anything bad about them.
i really want to try ferrodo ds2500 on my focus with st170 brake conversion but are a bit dear so when i did the conversion at christmas i stuck on some ebay grooved discs (machined delphi's that only cost Ł20 more for the pair) and standard ferrodo premiers. they work BRILLIANTLY!! haul my 2l focus up from 70 VERY quickly and even on a bone dry road with my sticky hancook ventus tyres the abs started to kick in so if on a budget just get the premiers.

I've used all the pads(except CL) mentioned here and get FREE ferrodo pads discs drums etc.
I instead BUY ebc yellowstuff, interesting to note the plod use these as they are police spec approved, unlike all the others mentioned here.
Discs from ebc used to be terrible, but good now as made in house.
My tarox 6 pots came with 10 mile old DS2500, now have new yellowstuff DS were binned, they have zero feel compared to the ebc yellows and reds, they are also crap from cold in comparison to the yellows/reds.
Ebc have a money back gaurantee that if you can find a better road spec pad they will refund you in full.
Mintex 1144/1155 are 100% better than DS 2500 imo, just very very dusty.
Despite taking off the anti rattle shims from the rear of the pads for a better feel I still have not in 15 years had so much as a squeak from the pads hot or cold, I use no coppaslip either on rear of pad.

i think this is all coming down to the car and to personal prefference so its a hard one to call really.

Just a quick one, EBC have revised all there compounds for their brake pads. If you look on scoobynet there are quite a few reviews. I have just trial'd a full set of EBC Blue stuff pads on my Impreza. I must say they are very good.
Other pads I have used before include Black Diamond, Pagid Blue's and performance friction pads. So have a good basis to go on

i had forgotten ebc had revised their compounds. if they're better now than they were and the disc porblems have been sorted then maybe they're now a good setup to chose.

On my cossie, it had 1144 when I got it but weren't happy so put in 1155 still weren't happy, so changed to others I'm a bit of a nut case on brakes, have also used ds2000 on my other sierra(now gone) was 2wd cossie brakes, very very wooden feel, took warming up to get best much more so than the ebc, tried out the 2500 on the cossie to see what they were like, big improvement on 2000, they weren't my pads and are on a track car now.

I get the ferrodos free, imo it would be a waste of a good car(cossie) if you didn't/couldn't have faith in the brakes would be a limit all the time, don't get me wrong the other pads mentioned are all good, but different people like different things I like pads that work straight away really well living on an estate where the kids game is to hide between cars and jump out, but any of those mentioned would do a good job.

The problem you find mostly is that its the wrong material for the model you are driving or type of driving. just so everyone is aware i have posted below our tech info for pad materials to clear some of this up.EBC have made giant strides......
This post has been made to highlight the massive improvements in EBC product quality for the faster car driver over recent years since EBC took over their Bristol manufacturing plant. YES all EBC pads are made in the UK !!! Read these guidelines to make sure you get the right pads for your car.
Greenstuff - Fast street for lighter cars - AF44/35 (Not Impreza or EVO etc)on box end
(base code E 344) Street Legal to R 90 regulations. Greenstuff is designed for cars up to 200 bhp and weights up to around 2 tons. For smaller hot hatches this new Green material is very impressive and bites hard from cold.
Redstuff fast street (not a race or trackday pad ) – . For all sizes and weights of car.
Latest compound code shows AF88/26 on box end (base code E 388) and is street legal to ECE R90 regulations. This is the latest compound of the Red family for fast street use with reduced (and easy to wash off dust) but not really for track use
Yellowstuff fast street and trackday - code AF93/94 on box end (base code DM 1793) Street legal to ECE R 90 regulations. Just starting to come through Surface Scorched now which means these bed in FAST.(EBC toast the surface in a special infra red tunnel to take away the bed in fade and loss of track time bedding in new pads for you)
If you buy a set and it doesnt say PRE BEDDED on the box end label, take 300-400 miles steady highway driving then start to hit them harder for 15 – 20 stops from 60 to 10-15 mph until you get them really hot and then let them cool overnight. DONT track them out of the box unless the box end label says PRE BEDDED OK ????. This is your fast street and occasional trackday pad. For all sizes and weights of car.
New Bluestuff NDX Fastest Street,trackday and full race any car - AF66/16SC on box end, SC stands for SCORCHED or pre bedded. NOTE THIS IS AN ENTIRELEY NEW COMPOUND AND NEEDS TO BE SPECIFIED BY ADDING NDX AFTER THE PAD NUMBER. Make sure you don’t get shipped the OLD Blue which was purely track driving and much harder. Impreza and EVO pads may be street legal to the new ECE R 90 brake safety regulations in NDX Bluestuff shortly, meanwhile this grade is "Officially" for track use only although its bite from cold is fantastic and makes it perfectly safe for street use (USA Canada and rest of the world just use them and enjoy, these European Regulations don’t affect you at all). It needs to be said that almost ZERO race pads being sold at the current time carry R 90 approval anyway so EBC is no different here .At least EBC have DONE the safety tests and passed them, waiting for long winded paperwork plus, read the next part. This pad also DOES NOT REQUIRE TYPICAL RACE PAD WARMUP because of the pre bedding feature making them great for street driving where vehicles have to come to a complete stop (rather than some race pads which are just designed to scrub off speed in cornering) and a good pedal response from cold in traffic is important.

EBC has Time Attack cars and good drivers who have thrashed the New Bluestuff NDX around the Nurburgring and found it an amazing brake material and great value for money. Available for any quick car. Everything you need to know is right here
