Default Recovering a car home

Have my eye on a car i want to buy which is around 30-40 miles away, however the car in question has no tax or mot, how could i get this back home?

I have a solid tow bar, but a mate says im not allowed to do this due to the car not being road legal?

Dont fancy shelling out 60-70 quid for someone to collect it for me

any help appreciated

Phone the AA or RAC and don't tell them it has no tax/mot. I got a car recovered without tax and mot before, just hope you don't get a fussy driver

get the current owner to tax it?

and get it booked in for a mot where ever you want, then you can legally drive it there

No ticket bud,so he couldn't tax it.to the op,don't take any chances right now mate, there's filth everywhere out to catch peeps towing, legally or otherwise and it's becoming a minefield.you should get that done for no more than about Ł50 really.do you know anyone with a proper car trailor(where you can get all four wheels off the ground)?

Where are you anyway mate,I've can sort it if it's in south Wales?

you can tow it on a straight bar as it then becomes a trailer to the front vehicle, and therefore covered by the tow car. , a rope would need the second car to be legle as it doesnt become a trailer HTH

AFraid not, it then becomes a trailer over 750kg without brakes, still not legal.

get insurance cover, then drive it straight to an MOT test centre for which you would already have booked?

there was a huge thread about this not long ago and the conclusion was to insure it and book it into an mot centre local to your home and either drive it straight to the mot (which is all perfectly legal even if going from london to scotland) or risk the last bit of the journey and take it home (the non legal bit so choose an mot station VERY close to home).

If someone has to steer and or brake it, it's a vehicle, and needs to be legal.

stop being tight and just pay to get it recovered,
if the extra expence of getting it home is making it too expansive then its not worth buying in the 1st place,
not trying to be cheaky mate but its not worth the hassle trying to get round the law,
where abouts are you?
plenty pf people on here with trailers/trucks etc that would help out for beer tokens etc

if someone is sitting in it and steering it and braking it, then they are "driving it" so it needs to be legit

that's why you need to put it onto a "braked" trailer so the car that is doing the towing is also doing the steering (via articulation) and the braking (via the braked part of the trailer in the towing hitch attachment) so you don't need another person in the car behind steering and braking
