Default rs2000 as a daily hack

been looking at these lately, can be had for 1500-2000

good/bad points how do they drive

do mk5/6 escorts suffer with rust underneath in the same way as the older mk3/4s will it need to be welded for every other mot like series 2's do

my mate has had a 3 of them and they drive really well. we had a 2.6 v6 audi and the rs out one night and the rs blew the audi away. the ones hes had have never had any real problems, just the usual rusty fuel filler cap.

I'm looking for a cheap hack and considered a mk5 rs2000, 1 because it will get me back in an rs and 2 because i have always liked them.

Then i had a word with meself and had a look at what is about for the same cash and found you can buy far far better cars for the money so i'll be getting a clio 172 i think.

I run one for 4 years as a daily hack and was perfect, did 150 k in the end with nothing to spend but servicing but the old tin worm had her in the end and just welded it up and moved it on as could not be arsed with welding bills at every mot.

Rust is a big problem, that why ours went into a van. Great handling cars, and put super chip and they pull really well. really under rated car IMO.

You be hard pushed to find one that does not need work in your price range

As mentioned above, the Clio sports are a better buy at this price.

Mondeo ST24's can be had cheaper if your just after abit of bang for your buck.

i love mine, £450 odd quid from auction, i put some oil and water in now and again and floor it everywhere, the drilled airbox sounds lovely on full throttle too.

top motoring for cheap money.

I'm trying to buy an ST24, but very hard to find one local for the right sort of money (ie cheap) that isn't a rust bucket. Even more difficult trying to find an RS. Good luck.

RS2K great choice IMO.
A Clio???? Make sure it's got a good stereo to drown out the squeaks and rattles where the interior's falling apart.
All cars have their bad points - Renault = dodgy electrics etc.
So you make your choice.

Admittedly mine has damage on the drivers side, bubbles on the arches, BUT it did go straight through the mot, advisory on 1 rear tyre.

engine is sweet as a nut and its a perfect daily, i can leave it anywhere and not worry about it.

Rs2k are a good motor, but proper rustbuckets!!and it can be shocking how good they look above but be so rotten underneath!engine/box are really strong, there was a fusebox issue with all escorts of that era but I should imagine most are sorted by now.all parts are cheap as fuck on them as well.

Their quick enough for a daily hack but difficult to tune from what I've read, although that may nit concern you.I'd say for 1500-2k you should get a good early car,in fact an exceptional one.I wouldn't bother with the mk7,there were quite a few goodies missing and let's be honest people would just think your driving a gti!!!for some reason as well a lot of those people think their mk7's are worth something as their newer, which they aren't!!

Mk4 golf gti n/a are a nice solid, but very slow car.they handle nice, but are crap on petrol.the turbo is a lot nicer but you'll be stretching at 2k to get one below 170k or thereabouts.a3 are nice again but a bit too pricey, maybe the Ibiza could be a good option as the money on them seems a bit less and their all the same underneath.

Avoid the pug 206 gti at all costs, poor poor car, electrics made by a blind man underwater, they just continually break.

I think saxo's have been covered pretty well on here over the years!!!

Ffs what is all the fuss with Clio 172's,their total and utter shit, sure they go ok but what a bag of fucking bones, everything breaks on them, electrics are wank, parts are expensive and their a proper chav motor.have a crash in one and see how strong they are too,I've repaired at least 6 or 7 of them since we opened and everyone of them had the legs go over, all from really low speed crashes.I witnessed one happen and the girl was proper shook up,she was doing about 10mph!!! My apprentice had a Clio,1.2 16v with 72k fsh.it refused to start at anything below 5 degrees centigrade, started using water for no apparent reason and one day it just shit itself, coilpack went, injector went, plug went all in one sitting!!!then we found there were chaffed wires on top of the engine as some pointless metal/rubber block just decided to break.wank cars, but they don't rust,I'll give them that!!!!
