Default who wants to know?

who the stig really is?

BBC in court to stop the identity being revealed....do you want to know? should we be allowed to hear all the details or should it be kept from everyone?

what do you think?

I really don't care who it is, but personally I think there's more than one.

It's probably right that the BBC should try to keep an air of anonymity about who it is, otherwise it won't be the same.

It would change the show if we knew who it was, I just can't believe its gone to court lol and on the other hand...how does "HarperCollins" know who it is? Who's autobiography is it...the stigs?

sorry, do we all work for the BBC??

Ben Collins

Been the favourite rumour for years, and confirmed by loads of places now. Never bothered me, because top gear is 100% make-believe anyway.

I dont think he outed himself though did he? Thought it was the sunday times going through his company accounts?

either way, I dont think it detracts from the program really.

Yeah he did out himself "apparently"

The 33-year-old let his secret slip when he asked them to help him produce a limited-edition print of The Stig in action. Gallery owner Simon Whitehead, 27, said: "I was absolutely amazed when he said he was The Stig, it was quite a big thing in a weird way."

Top Gear is a fictional program like eastenders is, and the stig is a character like one of hte characters in a soap.
I dont see what difference it makes who plays that character, in fact I dont see why they dont just use a whole load of different racing drivers all the time, and then the identity of each one would be irrelevant as there would have been dozens of them by now and no one would take any notice.

I would have thought in the contract to play the stig there was a non disclosure agreement so I dont see why Ben Collins would want to break that, would have thought it was quite a cushy number to just keep playing the role TBH

It's better that 'the Stig' is just a character, I don't really want to know who it is, it's not supposed to be a person per se, I like the fact the stig is faceless and nameless

Isnt that the whole point of the stig not knowing who it is?, hes obviously very talented behind the wheel but half of the fun is not knowing who it is

All smoke and mirrors, yes there has been more than one, but I think it could've been the same guy for a while. It could be James May for all we know, they seem to go out their way to have the "captain slow" tag, which is clearly a load of crap as he can obviously drive.
As for the Ben Collins rumour, that was around before the wheel was invented, being accused of being the "stig" is hardly something you'd deny, unlike if you were accused of being gay or a terrorist, or even a gay terrorist.

[joke] Or even a sheep shagger [joke]

There was a thing in the daily mail last week, he wants to write his autobiography. I think the mistory, or lack of these days, about the stig is good, gives people something to talk about rather than the usual of how shite the world we live in is

I couldn't really care less who The Stig is. It could have been a whole host of people by now, with one person being the sole focus (i.e Ben Collins).

More importantly, where are the BBC getting their funding to fight the court case I wonder? They'll need to use some funds to get the ball rolling, regardless of who wins the case.

Probably from the massive profits that selling top gear generates them world wide which in turn is used to subsidise other top gear services and programmes, and seeing as those profits are at risk if some of the appeal in the show is lost when the mystery surrounding the stig dissappears?

the idea of "the stig" is that he;s a faceless driver and the focus is on the car and what it can do round the track.
If they had a named driver testing the cars its open to stupulation that theyre a shit driver and in the hands of someone else the car would perform better.

shame really as said earlier i would imagine the stig's job a crushy one! i remember reading he gets between 5k-10k per episode!

it doesnt really matter, the stig is someone who gets his arse handed to him by f1 drivers who go on the show, it could be any of us. i think the guy's maybe missing the point that nobody really gives a fuck about who ben collins is, and how he never became a racing driver, that story has been told- sounds like maybe he's trying to cash in with a book deal but i wont be buying it. im sure the stig will live on.

I believe your figure is about 20 times too high there mate, its only a few hundred per episode IIRC!

Im sure it will be in the press soon as no doubt it will get pulled out of his company accounts or autobio, but it was definately nothing like that much!

Haha look at one of the telegraph links and they found info through his company accounts! They quoted those figures. Seems high though

It is wrong that they identify the Stig but then there is also more than one person that is the Stig, it is ridiculous that somebody should try to out him as the focus is on the car and not the driver as has been said above

I'm just quoting the figure that was in the report i read when the story first broke. Dont forget its the bbc here, they did pay Jonathon Ross over Ł6 million a year and Graham Norton close to that! LOL

if the identity is kept secret then i think that's a good idea we don't need to know who it is just that the cars are being driven 100%

that is the point. he signed something saying he would not disclose, and is now going back on that. what is the point of a contract. that makes him a cheat, a liar and a thief in my book. fairly pointless thing to do as well, as he will get a fee for the book but no further bbc earnings and probably nothing else from book sales as who will want to buy it in all honesty? might get a few christmas sales from people desperate for a dad gift, but that's about it.

disappointed for my sister in law that she lost the case as she worked her arse off, but sadly she suspected that they wold lose all along.
