As title really car in question is a 1.8 td mondeo as i'v got the car started now but the rev counter isn't working niether is the handbrake light but I suspect that to be the bulb more than anything

rpm is driven off the alternator on the older diesels.

As above, the alt is usually fed from one feed of the three of the alternator, around 8V, outputs on a W terminal if I remember right.

it's ok now thanks lads it wasn't a faulty connection in the end, and managed to get it all working again after proving out some wires

Most modern diesel engine speed is picked up at the fuel pump.
