Default Anyone use a Scanner ( airband etc )

Sitting here looking at loads of planes in the sky and the boy in me fancies getting a scanner to have a listen.

Anyone use one or hae used in the past.

Found these 2 on ebay £255 and £121 i presume the only difference is width of frequency's as they dont have different power as they only receive ?

Will the £121 do what i want ?

i've got one, but don't really know much about it! all i do with mine is listen to the planes too. imo the £121 one would do for what you want it for, but check out this place, it's where i got mine.

I have loads of scanners (2 x Icom IC-R2, 1 x Icom IC-r5, 1 x Yupiteru MVT-7100, 2 x Yupiteru MVT-3300 EU's, 1 x GRE PSR-255 and a Realistic Patrolman Pro-2026).
What types of planes do you want to listen to military or civil? If its just civil you will need one that can recieve the range 108Mhz - 137Mhz, if you want to listen to military aircraft you will need one that covers from about 200Mhz to about 390Mhz.
If you can get your head round the Icom IC R2 (now obsolete but still available on Ebay) and Icom IC-R5 (replacement for the R2) they are fantastic scanners and brilliant for air shows due to the compact size. Also the Yupiteru MVT-7100 is an excellent scanner and can be picked up reasonably on Ebay, this is also much easier to use than both the Icoms. All of these have continuous coverage and will pick up just about anything out there that is possible to pick. You will not pick up the police, fire or ambulance now as most have gone digital.
Hope this helps, if you need any further info just ask.

By the way i would avoid both of the scanners that you originally mentioned in your OP.

mostly civil as hopefully im near enough to pick up city airport and heathrow.

If i can pick up military then cool beans but not sure if there is enough action near me.

I was looking at the icom ic-r5 superb size but thought a full keypad would be better but i spose once its in and saved i suspect it doesnt matter.

There are a few of them yupiteryu mvt-7100 on ebay do you recomend them over the ic-r5 ?

what about the alinco dj-x7 that is a small unit

thanks

I managed to find my old one the other day as it's been sitting in the cupboard for a while now.
Not sure how it bears up to the new, new stuff but it's a realistic pro 43 hyperscan. Used to be able to listen to the police and mobile phones, etc on it. I'd imagine most have gone digital now?

The MVT-7100 is a fantastic scanner if a little dated now but it is still one of the most sensitive scanners available. The keypad does make it a lot easier to use than the Icom IC-R2 & IC-R5 but once you have got to grips with how to use them they are brilliant and so compact (they are smaller than a lot of modern mobile phones but a bit chunkier). Yupiteru do a little brother to the MVT-7100 called the MVT-3300EU. It doesn't have the same frequency coverage but if you just want to pick up civil aircraft and other run of the mill stuff again it is a great little scanner.
Can't really comment on the Alinco DJ-X7 as i've had no experience of using one but if i had the money and was looking for another scanner this is what i would buy:

To be honest i don't think that it will ever be "un-jammed" as the encryption is constantly changing so basically once you've decoded the current encryption it will have changed again.

The amount of stuff that you can pick up on them now has declined massively but you can still pick up some analogue cordless landlines (31Mhz - 31.2125Mhz) if your scanner goes down that low, civil aircraft, military aircraft, air display aircraft, air traffic controllers, shop security, marine traffic (boats), security companies, CCTV staff, shop watch schemes, CB radios. I have had one of mine modified so that you can decode pagers but this is not very interesting.
Actually after typing all of that i've surprised myself just how much there still is to listen to.
