From what I remember, if you write and tell them that you are the new owner, they will send you a logbook, bypassing the form and payment.

Assuming its a car you have just bought?

If you are already the owner, the reminder that comes through is all you need to tax it online so you dont need the V5 anyway.

Can't see why they havent been sent a reminder TBH if the car is in their name.

They'll need to pay the 25 quid though by the sounds of it.

not sure but he may get one for free because its a duplicate

i thought it was £25 if the car was changing names on the logbook and they never had the green section.

No, a duplicate carries the fee too.
As it should TBH, not fair tax payers subsidising idiots who lose paperwork

You can bypass the fee if you can find the green 'new owner' slip that tears off the V5. Your mate should have one from when he bought the car as well as the one that's on the V5 so more chance of finding one of the 2.

The old one will have the wrong document number now, its only the new one that will be any use I believe ,and its likely to be still attached to the lost V5

DVLA are in the process of issuing new-style V5s to everyone at the moment - maybe he'll get lucky and have one of those arrive in time.

Of course, he might lose that on his way to the Post Office too!

Edited to say they are only issuing the new ones when you make a change to the car or keeper details, initially at least!

At a post office maybe, but I believe they wont accept it after a 3 months?
Also it wont work online on the old one IME, as i tried it only a few weeks ago and it wouldnt accept the old document number, I bought my corsa off a mate of mine and he was waiting for the new v5 to come back as he just changed reg, I tried to tax it on the old one while the new one was in the post and it wouldnt let me.
