i sold the enigne out of my old mk6 escort to a chap who wanted me to fit it aswell, so i think i charged £200 or £250 for fitting on top of the £500 for the engine
it took me 12 hours non stop out and in, but things like trying to get his manifold off didnt happen, all the nuts were rounded etc luckily i had a spare that was the same that he had FOC, then upon taking the drive shafts out, the inner bearings just fell apart when i took them out but there was fuck all i could do about that lol made a bit of a racket under load when it was back together.
at least he only had a short trip back from bath to stoke on trent lol
i thought that was too cheap too, was one of the hottest days of the year and i was cunted when i finished!

Did you agree a price before starting the work?
I've learnt to do that and if they moan about the money - i tend to walk away from the job...
By the same token - i've also shot myself in the foot and ended up doing loads of extra work for free

That's why I've packed it in,the amount of pricks out there at the moment is just fucking ridiculous!!if you work it out mate,7 hours labour for £125 that's about £15 per hour, bout half where you could be really,£25 would be an absolute minimum.
Thing is,on a job like that, you could easily round a mounting bolt and get stuck on it for another 2 hours or so,need to pop out to the scrappy to get a few bits and bobs etc and that's another hour,it can add up easily.
I had a guy down last week ask me to change a rear shock on his pajero, well actually just the nut on the top as it kept working loose where his boy had butchered it and fucked the thread up.say half hour to get it off,15 mins to cut the thread,20mins to put it all back so about an hour in total.I tell him £30,cunt nearly chokes and says he'll "let me know" by the end of the day, fuck off, stupid cunt.he never came back so some mug did it for fuck all.
Bodywork was even worse IMHO,I had some nob ask me the other week to give him a quote to repair a dent in the wing and colourcoded both bumpers, but I couldn't see the car first!!WTF???
Be worth you getting an autodata cd mate as it can really help with jobs that your either unsure of or would just like an idea of what they think you should charge.I used it on a Celica gearbox/clutch the other week and fair play it was spot on,think it came out as £250 with g box oil @£30 per hour.
If you want a copy of the cd,drop me a pm mate.

Exactly what i was thinking. Cheeky fooker, i paid a small local garage £180 just to change my timing belt on my Mondeo and thought that was fair compared to my local main dealer.

Been there too,I find it's best to give a ballpark but these days the public literally expect it for nothing.sad thing is as times get even harder, prices get even lower.
Guy two doors down has Mot centre and does well, gets the type of person who just pays the bill rather than ask "how much".hetold me he had a phone call the other day from some bird asking how much to do pads on a megane,he quoted an hour, sounded fair to me,he's £32.50 per hour.she said she was quoted £15 by another garage but thought it was a bit expensive hence why she rang round EVERY garage in the area!!!

No doubt she'll have rung say a dozen places and the phone call will have lasted a few minutes and then she'll have looked for another one to ring. Call it an hour of her time when she could have earnt X amount of money... Then no doubt she'll drive miles to go somewhere cheaper, fuel cost, more of her time etc.
She'd be better just paying a few quid more and going off a recommendation from friends/family!
Bottom line for me though, would I really trust the cheapest place to change my brake pads...?

That's what baffles me... Some people don't value their own time in these things

I just can't believe the cheek of some people. You should have taken the engine back out at no extra charge and told him to take it to Citreon to put it back in!
Last time I had my Cossie up to Ford they were charging £64 + vat per hour labour the robbing swines, and they made a shit job of the work I wanted doing as well.
