I'd worked at MSD for a good few months before I experienced a completely original standard saph. When Stu and I went out for a test drive I think I actually turned round and said "So is that what all the fuss was about?"

Standard cars don't and won't feel fast if you've been driving 400bhp cars! If you'd only been driving 100bhp hatchbacks, then that Saph would have felt quick.

Its strange how your perception of speed changes over time. Mine is stuffed now, 500bhp feels 'about normal'

my first one was driving round Speke with dave cos 4x4 in the pissing down rain

I nearly shit myself.

Actually driving one was when I bought mine and drove it from Coventry back to Liverpool and tbh I thought it was shit and wondered what the fuss was about, then I took it to Stu@MSD and it was completly different.

When I first drove my 2wd back in 99 I'd just swapped a chipped up frst plus £750 for the Cossie,it was supposed to be chipped etc,had ss exhaust, big filter, rebuilt motor and it literally was shit, couldn't even get boost til 6k revs!!picked it up the next day and drove it to work, dull cunt I bought it off thought it was a good idea to t
open the bleed valve to make it boost more, but this was causing the ecu/overboost to cut the power.I screwed it to the middle and fuxk me it was quick,my first experience of getting it sideways(well spinning out!!!) and I was well hooked!!!

I've now got a 4x4 and driving it home a few years ago it didn't feel as quick as my scooby import, but it still felt very special.I only noticed how quick it was over a ton really, just felt like it would pull forever more til the road ran out.4x4 felt nice and tight on the road as well,I bet it'll be megafun in a focus, much better than a boring fwd torque steer machine(starts massive debate on how much better frs are to cossies!!!!)

Around Castle Combe it lapped slightly quicker than the 1988 Lotus Esprit Turbo, 220bhp 944 Turbo and half a second behind the E28 M5 with 286bhp.

Also managed to open a sizeable gap on the similar weight E30 M3 with the same power - 200bhp - ( that is revered even today for its excellent handling ) round the fast, bumpy track.

I don't think a standard Xr4x4 2.9 would achieve the same results

The first one i ever drove or had been out in was when i bought my own one!

Ive loved cossies since i watched rallying from aged 5 and I just knew it would be all its hyped up to be. Mines a strong stage one and was enough to have wicked fun in the wet on the way home from buying it. Ive had various RS turbos over the last 6 years but can never go back im hooked on cossies.

Got a T34 sitting now ready for greys and a setup that should make me happy powerwise

Carry on building mate a tuned focos cant be anything other than a beast

The Cosworth was the fastest of the range, it was also faster and cheaper than all rivals.(Lapping the M3 3.1 seconds quicker round Castle Coombe)

You may as well say the same for a standard MK1 FRS, this would feel slow if you drove a MK2 FRS as they have much more power and so will feel on par with Evo's etc, cars are getting increasingly more powerful.

XR was certainly not faster or even near as fast.

You're quite right - when the Cosworth came out in 1986 there weren't many 4 seater cars at the price that had the same performance.

As for the Sapphire, a 4-door 4-seater saloon car that gets to 100 in 16 seconds might be considered 'slow' nowadays but have a look at the mainstream manufacturers and see what cars are available new that actually do that in timed tests..............

the first i bought is my own and the one i own now, i think people get lost in all the big figures been chucked around, mine is a stage 1 circa 285bhp, and it still gives me the grin factor, and is so drivable its untrue, power on tap when you need it, and up 2 130mph there is not much diffrence between a stage 1 and stage 3, and especially on britans roads, i dont think you need much more than a stage 3 fast road setup. i have really considered something else, but when i think more about the fact i have got a perfectly setup 4 door saloon, with more power, than most NEW cars, not bad mpg, a head turner, and only cost me £289 to insure, i really think will a megane sport or evo give me that buzz!!!

Stage 3 mate, around 360 max. Don't bother though, you quickly become bored of it although it's always a lot of fun at that power.

The first time i ever went in a cossie was when my old man bought his 3dr in 1987, i was 16 at the time.

Just felt so powerful back then.
