Default Mechanic horror story I heard

Thought I would share as I was gob smacked lol

My friend owns his own garage but years ago he was a spanner at a company in Bromsgrove and as part of the company another spanner was there working on cars.

He explained how the other spanner once was working on a rover V8 and dropped a bolt down the spark plug hole and instead of trying to fish it out with a magnet he just bolted everything back up and started it.

When it started he said you could here the smashing of this bolt and he imediatly rev'd the hell out of it, to this I thought it obviusly went bang!

But no, aparently it all went quiet and the bolt must of just sat in the top of the piston

I was gob smacked lol well the bloke it no longer in buisness and moved abroad but I can't believe some one would do that

thats it lol just thought I'd share

My mate did that with his old mans merc he was restoring when we were about 13 and mucking around in the garage he dropped a screw down the hole and never told his old man. Months later it needed a rebuild but his old man just assumed that it must've been fcuked as it was in a fair state when he got it in the first place. turned out a beautiful car in the end though so maybe a blessing Lol.

I was once workin a vw dealership next too a a school
a touran came in with a funny smell
I found a dead half burnt cat wraped around the steering rack, didn't feel like touching it so I made a noose (sp) and put it around it's neck and pulled it off, I didn't want to trow the stinking thing in the bin so I went to trow it in the bushs outside I mistimed my trow and the end of the rope got caught high in a tree

so dead half burnt half rotting cat hanging by a noose from a tree outside a school...... Lol not good

Doesn't sound tooo bad tbh, always 2 sides to every story, first one could've been an honest mistake. others just shit/poorly maintained old cars that were ready to break at the first sign of a spanner or disturbing something. Especially an R5.

I worked at Land Rover for 15 years, one of my m8's was on V8 build, they had an engine back from North America that had seized. When they stripped it down, in the sump they found a ham sandwich in a plastic lunch bag blocking the oil pick up

they both sound like bull shit stories IMO,

firstly, if your viewing a car how the fuck do you get to put a pound coin in the engine,
and who would leave a ham sandwich in a bag in the bottom of the sump ? and is there no mechainic's in north america that can rebuild a engine, unless you are from north america lol.

The V8's were built in Solihull, thats why I said when they had it back, i.e back to Solihull to inspect why it had seized. Not that difficult to understand.

As to why it was there in the first place, the guys who worked on the production line used to sit next to the line on their breaks. Easy enough to put your sarnies resting on a half built engine.

i used to work at a bodyshop and a rs turbo i arranged on a forum came in to be resprayed ,cut a long story short the boss didnt paint it on time and when he did it was rushed and had overspray and runs on it etc ,owner as i would be was not amused and i said to boss that it was out of order and he told me he didnt care as he had his money and the blame would be put on me ,i told him to get fooked and was told where the door was if i didnt like it .
i think it got done another two times and still wasnt right as bodyshop owner wasnt perepared to lose any money on the deal but had to i think due to owner going to trading standards or something
i since found out that it wasnt the first time he had done this and probably still is as he shat on his suppliers etc ,went bankrupt or something but has another unit probably doing the same again to new unsuspecting customers

Default Mechanic horror story

Here's 1 for you guys that actually happened to me with my car..
As I had too many work commitments back in 2007 I didn't have the time to play with my car much and was recommended to a guy in Somerset, I had a rebuilt 3000miler engine to go in and needed sum1 to fit it, well let's just say, I drove it 11 miles back home and just as I got home, I went to turn around and park on the drive when suddenly on full lock I heard a big clunk and crunch noise, scraped along the floor.. On further inspection he sum how managed to strip the threads off my brand new engine mount and stripped the threads on all the 17mm bolts holding the gearbox up by the cradle... What's worse is he didn't say a word but actually put 4 pea sized bird shit welds on all 4 corners of my gearbox cradle.. The lot was on the floor
safe to say I always find time to work on my s2 now, no more garages!!
as for the f%#k up a new mount and all bolts changed out for toughened 19mm and all was well again

back when i was serving my time, i was in a rover dealership()
anyhow, had a car back for strange knocking noise intermitantly,
we had it in several times and couldn't find it anywhere,
after months we finaly found the problem,
there was a marble inside the sill, must have been left in when the shell was
being manufactured, some bored factory worker having a laugh,
took us months of searching, couldn't find a thing,
think its funny as fook now but i remember not being amused at the time

A mate of mine was telling me about a new Land Rover that had the engine stripped due to it being very noisey. They took the head off to find No:1 piston completely missing! Con-rod was in there just flailling around...

i used to work for fiat and alfa years ago and i was working on a alfa 147. The brake lights were stuck on. I was fookin about with the brake light switch and could i fook get the lights to go out. I went back to my tool box and seen a 5 pence coin on top of my box. I got a bit of glue and stuck it to the brake pedal. The brake lights went off and started to work as normal.

I saw an evo come in from another tuning company once with loads of problems - the thing that scared me the most was the stainless steel ball bearing that had been used to blank the dump valve... I wonder what damage that would have done flying out with 2 bar pressure behind it!
