Default Charge temps/ chargecooler help.......

I've got a 400bhp Cossie engine running 2bar on a T34

I have also got 2 charge coolers with 2 sets of pipe runs, 2 pumps and 1 massive rad with 2 pipe inlets/outlets but the rad is complete internally not split.

1 of the charge coolers has a leak from the boost side into the water side.
To stop the leak and stop water entering the engine I have disconnected the water side from the leaky cooler.

Now I am seeing really high charge temps, 87degrees at the highest.

Now do I get the cooler fixed? Bearing in mind I need to drop 50degrees at least.
Will it be good enough to do this?
It's roughly 200mmx 150x150.
It's a twin core pace jobbie.

There's no point me paying to fix this 1 if it's still not up to the job?

And there's 1s on eBay that are similar size that say they are good enough to support 600bhp.
So why is 1 of mine struggling with 400? Lol

Also if I get mine repaired and still don't get low enough temps, what other options do I have?
Water injection? Any others?

A rather vague question, with little useful information.

Bare in mind that giving HP ratings for a cooler, is about as useful as putting Gordon Brown in a PM's job.

A 5.0 V8 making 2psi of boost and 600bhp, isnt going to need the same charge cooling requirements as a 1.5 4 pot using 40psi making 600bhp.

Sadly, a lot of those Barrel style coolers are either mis-sold, or the person buying really hasnt researched.
I am of course guessings its a barrel style....as anywhere I read of people using them, their intake temps are crap !!!

Largely for the reasons Ive just gave.

You really need to speak to a proper place that builds these to get one specced to suit.

Pace could do it, Docking Engineering, A&H, etc etc etc

Or simply just get the biggest you can physically squeeze in

why not bin the charge coolers get an rs 500 intercooler and have water injection set to come on when say the temp go,s over 55 degrees. Thats the set up i had with 350bhp and never really had temps over 65 ish on my secs moniter even on a really hot day and i still have the same set up with 500bhp

Bit confused to your reply stevie?

I've said it's a Cossie, so a 2l 4pot turbo, with a t34 runnin 2 bar boost.
Also said the coolers were made by pace, and pace do square chargecoolers, not barrel.
Also they are twin core so have 2 water-cooling elements to them.

I don't really have much room to play with and have no airflow for an intercooler hence 2 chargecoolers.

I have a WI kit I could use but would rather get it workin properly without it.

On a side note, does any1 know if a level8 ecu with a pectel board can be used to turn on water injection at a certain temp?

Im just saying that because someone says an intercooler is capable for 600bhp....well it is totally meaningless for the reasons Ive described.

600bhp can be achieved in many ways, with varying levels of intake charge heat.

You need to determine if it is lack of air cooling ability, or a lack of water cooling.

More than likely though, it is a lack of air cooling ability due to not enough core area or volume.

The core needs to be big enough to slow the air down for long enough to get cooled as it passes through.

if you are seeing temps as high as you say, and I'm assuming water temperature is well under control and not the problem, you need a larger A2W unit for the charge air.

You could add water injection also, and it could see good benefits, but ideally you want efficient chargecooling at all times

The Barrel comment was in reference to the PWR coolers. They look nice, but Ive yet to hear of anyone actually achieving very cool air with them. Likely as their HP sizing guide, is very misleading.

87 deg charge temps!? Bloody he'll even the worst intercooler in the world would struggle to be that bad.

Is there a reason you want to use a charge cooler over an intercooler?
Or is that not really a possibility in your r5?

EDIT: chip might be able to help, as his nova used a charge cooler and never heard him saying about any charge temp issues.

theres no way of me running an intercooler in the 5,
and chips car has a lot more room in the back than mine, as ive hidden mine away.

im going to get the faulty cooler repaired, then go from there i think
